Using Guerrilla Marketing to Promote Your App

by Emma L. Business consultant

You’re on a tight budget, aren’t you? You’re probably looking for different, unique, and exciting ways to promote your new app that’ll change the world as we know it, but you’re (still) short for cash.

Don’t worry, that’s not a problem. That’s just a small and insignificant obstacle on your road to success. Not having money to advertise and promote your app is not an issue. After all, not having enough people was not a problem for the likes of Che Guevara. He still managed to win the war and become famous in the process.

In fact, not having enough of one resource is exactly what made them think in a different way. They had to be creative and play their best with the cards that life had dealt them. The same can be said about you, so let’s take a look at how guerilla marketing can help you and your product.

Use public art

Graffiti. They’re almost everywhere, and they can be a great opportunity for marketing your product. Why? Because most people stop for a second to think about the meaning behind the street art. Well, that’s not entirely true. They stop to think about the street art if that art catches their attention. Hire a team of street artists and let them create graffiti, but tell them this:

  • Don’t scare people

  • Don’t upset people

  • Don’t annoy people

  • Send a message in an intriguing way

Use the web

You don’t have to appear in the real world to promote your app; the internet is also a perfect place for that. Running your guerilla marketing campaign online is the cheapest way of doing so. Create a viral picture or a video, organize a contest, or simply do something completely unexpected.

For example, no one ever expected to get the opportunity to rent a country, right? Well, now you can rent Liechtenstein on Airbnb. Sure, no one will do that actually, but that’s free marketing for both Liechtenstein and Airbnb, and that’s a perfect example of guerilla marketing.

Show up and steal the show

The element of surprise is important if you want to promote your app. You need to shock people, but you need to delight them at the same time. That’s not an easy task, but it’s a doable one. You can hire street performers to do something completely unexpected on a subway or in a town square.

Don’t forget to reward those who paid attention to the performance. Hand out quality custom T-shirts that promote your app, or some other gifts that are tightly connected with your app.

For example, if you’re trying to promote a dating app – give a rose to everyone. If you’re promoting a fitness app – hand out bottles of water with your app’s name on it. It’s that simple because people love free stuff.

Stickers

You might think that stickers are the thing of the past, but that’s certainly not the case. They’re still effective, and they’re the most cost-effective way of marketing if we put the internet out of the equation. People put stickers on their guitars, laptops, consoles, and other possessions to show off the brands they love. Hand out free stickers with other free stuff at events and let them work their magic. After a while, you’ll probably notice your stickers in buses, bars, and pretty much everywhere.

Guerilla marketing can be either a hit or miss; there’s no in-between. Before you start using this tactic, you need to know your audience. Ask yourself these questions:

  • How old are my target customers?

  • Where do they hang out and what do they usually do?

  • How can my app help them?

Take all the things into consideration and get to know your potential customers. Do your research and start promoting your app in new and exciting ways. Get people’s attention and let them know about your product!
