Usage of Cancellous Screw in Orthopaedic Surgery

by Tarun Yadav Sr. Seo Excutive

In case of broken bones, if the bones are held in place for long, the bones heal themselves. However, in many critical cases, the bones need to be held in place and pressure is needed to be applied to them. In such cases, bone plates are used. Bone plates are metallic or ceramic plates that are screwed to the bones using special type of nails. These nails are different form the conventional nails and are used by orthopaedic surgeons only. There are mainly two types of screws used in such surgeries, where metallic or ceramic plates need to be attached to the bones. These are the cortical screw and the cancellous screw. As it is implied by the name, the cortical screws are used for placement in the cortical regions and the cancellous screws are used for placement in the cancellous bones. Both the screws may be partially or fully threaded.

Cortical screws have a smaller pitch than cancellous screws. They have relatively shallow threads and a larger outer to core diameter. These screws are also generally stronger. They have a blunt end. These are used to fix plates to long bones. The blunt ends are there to reduce soft tissue damage.

The cancellous screw is used when it comes to the fixation of the cancellous bone. The most common use of them is in the metaphyses of long bones where there is an abundance of cancellous bones. They are much more deeply cute and are widely spaced. These screws are also relatively sharper and hence, they are self-tapping.

These screws are not only used for the attachment of bone plates, but also when it comes to attachment of prosthesis. One common prosthesis that is used is the hip replacement surgery that is done using the bipolar prosthesis. Hip replacement may be needed in a variety of cases. One of them is in case of severe accidents. If the patients suffer major hip damage, then it is recommended that the patient undergoes a hip replacement surgery. Also, in cases of arthritis pain, such measures are taken when the case is very serious.

Bipolar prosthesis is the most commonly used in hip replacement. Hip replacement may be partial or complete, based on the case. Also, patient satisfaction varies from one patient to another. There are cases of chronic pain, metal sensitivity and metal toxicity. However, these cases are very rare and tests are performed so that the prosthesis made of the right material is used in the surgery.

Another prosthesis that is commonly used is the hook plate. These are generally used in surgery or the shoulder. These are more of implants. Generally, the hook plate is made out of stainless steel, like more other implants and prosthesis. These hook plates are particularly used in Lateral clavicle fractures and Dislocations of the acromioclavicular joint. This implant, is however removed after the healing is complete. Usually, the surgery of the implant is pretty simple. The step consists of incision, Insertion and Fixation.
