Upholstery Foam In Sofa Cushions

by Jessica W. Writer
The upholstery foam in the cushions of your sofa can play a significant role in deciding how long they would last. If the material is not upto the mark, it can impart a tired and worn-out look to your couch in addition to reducing the level of comfort provided by it and losing the ability to rebound.

In general, the polyurethane foam in Sydney, used in sofa cushions, is actually a product manufactured by the petroleum industry. It is available in a number of grades that indicate the price and firmness of the different variants. These distinctly graded variants of foam are usually found in specialty stores and drapery construction workrooms, or with upholsterers and distributors.

Foam is normally measured using two standards, which are compression and density. Density is the volume of material within one cubic foot, whereas compression can be defined as the force needed for compressing 25 percent of the cubic foot. These two entities describe the hardness to softness of any foam type. We can take an example to understand this. A particular type that has been graded as 2720 would require 9 kilogram force of pressure to be compressed by 25 percent, which is ideal if you want your cushions to be soft and more comfortable. The denser ones, having a density of about 2 kilograms per cubic foot, also come with ratings of low compression. Those with a rating of 2735 need about 16 kilogram force of pressure for compression, and are 1.2 kilogram per cubic foot dense.

The different types of polyurethane foam are also rated by the number of years that they can be used for. For instance, a product that has been tagged as 5-year will not begin to show signs of deterioration before it has been used daily for 5 years. Same is the thing with the 10 or 15-year rated variants. Some are even marked as having high resilience, especially the ones that have a density of 1 kilogram per cubic foot.

Cushions that have a core of foam, which has been wrapped with poly-fill or down, can deliver the benefits of both. The core would decide the firmness or softness of the cushion, while the wrap of poly-fill or down gives a slight rumpled appearance and softness. The foam also provides a rebounding effect that is typical of it, a quality absent in fiber or down filled cushions.
