Update & Manage Virus Definitions or Program Version in Avast Antivirus

by Emma Williams Avast Technical Support UK
To identify malware and other threats on any system, Avast antivirus uses a database of known virus definitions. So, it is important to regularly update the Virus Definitions. The program here means the ‘user interface’ and all program components in Avast Antivirus and if the program is also updated regularly, then automatically general improvements are done and few issues are fixed. Avast Support would like to suggest you that keep automatic mode enabled on your software, so that it updates automatically whenever a new version is available. Now, learn to upgrade virus definitions or program versions if you have an older version and also manage settings through the steps provided below:

Update Virus Definitions (VPS) manually:

  • In the system tray, give a right click on the icon of Avast on your screen.
  • From the context menu move your cursor over Update and click Engine and virus definitions.
  • Click OK when the installation finishes.

Upgrade Program manually:
  • Launch the Avast icon on screen and right click on it.
  • Take your cursor over the option of Update from the context menu and then select Program.
  • The progress of the Program will be displayed on your screen.
  • Click OK when the process completes.
  • Restart the system by immediately clicking Restart Now, if asked.

Manage automatic VPS Updates:
To access the settings of VPS, Follow the Ways Mentioned Below.
  • Open the Avast user interface and go to Settings.
  • From the left panel click Update.
  • Beside the Settings button click the downward facing arrow in order to expand the panel in the section of Virus Definitions. Here tick the option according to your preference.
  1. Automatic update (enabled by default): Updates are downloaded and installed automatically on a regularly. You are not required to do anything.
  2. Ask when an update is available: Sends a notification to you when a new version of the software is available.
  3. Manual update (not recommended): Neither updates are not installed automatically nor you get a notification about the new version available. You need to click Update, to install the latest version manually.
  4. Enable streaming updates (enabled by default): downloads micro-updates continuously as new malware is discovered.

  • To confirm your changes, click OK.
