Unusual Oman: Why This Middle Eastern Country Should Inspire Your Next Vacation

by Rubi Ahsan Associate S.E.O Consultant

In Muscat, the capital of Oman, an otherworldly landscape awaits you. Vast mountain ranges stretch as far as the eye can see, with terrain so rugged you'd think nothing survives here. The country is filled with mountains, freshwater wadis, date plantations, Bedouin villages and culture and history that go back centuries and perfectly combine tradition and modernity.

Unlike its Middle Eastern counterparts, Muscat has none of the glitzy skyscrapers. Rather, it is a city that almost seems to stand still in time, with low-rise buildings in shades of cream and white, nestled in the mountains and framed by the shimmering ocean. Incense-filled souks fit comfortably into luxury resorts, along with traditional architecture that will make you want to pull out your camera at every corner. To make the most of Muscat and beyond, here's your ideal travel guide.

 Best Arabic Cuisine In Oman

To eat

Muscat is a foodie delight and you should not miss tasting Omani food. If you're a fan of slow-cooked meats, Shuwa is marinated lamb cooked in a sandbox for several hours and often served as a festive meal in homes. Most traditional restaurants have this on their menu. Alternatively, Mishkak is a popular street snack; Grilled meat skewers are cooked on a charcoal grill. You can try them at the stalls in the Qurum district, Muscat.

Popular with locals is Rozna, a traditional Omani fortress with closed sections. It is perfect for intimate family meals. It is recommended to stew date juice, a fish dish, and Kabuli rice with potatoes and meat.

Bait Al Luban is another fine dining restaurant serving traditional and modern Omani dishes. Get different pieces of bread like mandazi (soft, sweet bread) or maldouf (date bread with mixed grills). Be sure to sweeten your meals with dates and coffee (Arabic Qahwah made with ground coffee, sugar, cardamom, and rose water).

Shop

Skip the malls and head to a local souk instead. Muscat's Muttrah Souk is a bit commercial, but here you'll find fantastic Turkish lamps, artifacts, pottery, and incense at rock-bottom prices. For a more authentic experience, visit the local Nizwa souk, two hours from Muscat. Even today, the pottery and spice markets are home to alleyways lined with old shops and cafes. There, visit the Nizwa Fort for its size and architecture.

To see

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (Muscat)

The Grand Mosque is an architectural masterpiece. Heavily influenced by Persian architectural style, the main prayer room is a visual delight with large Swarovski chandeliers, stained glass windows, and millions of blue mosaic tiles creating a majestic image.

Royal Opera House

Muscat's Royal Opera House is lavishly built in the heart of the city. It's the perfect opportunity to dress up and see a show here.

Wadis

Go off-road in one of Oman's many Wadis. The picturesque and lush landscape against an arid background makes for a beautiful backdrop. During the monsoon, these Wadis fill with turquoise water and thrive with an incredible ecosystem.

Dolphin Watching

Muscat's waters are home to dolphins, and on clear days you can spot schools of these playful creatures. A speedboat ride from the marina is the best choice.
Beyond Muscat

Jebel Sifa

Jebel Sifah is a relatively new integrated seaside town about an hour's drive from Muscat. The leisurely journey opens you to new vistas of quaint Bedouin villages and shepherds grazing their mountain goats. Once you're here, stay at the Sifawy boutique hotel. Spend the evenings with a poolside cocktail at The Bank Beach Club and there is also a 9-hole golf course.

Jebel Shams

Jebel Shams is the highest peak in Oman and offers great views over the valley. Not only is it a great spot at sunset, but also explore the wilderness on a 4×4 vehicle or hike through 300-year-old villages for the ultimate adrenaline rush. Stay at The View, an eco-friendly property with an infinity pool.
