Unsightly Braces be gone!

by Helen Blunt orthodontist

The days of wire and elastic bands can be relegated to the history books thanks to modern advances in teeth straightening.

For many people, the thing that makes them hesitate when it comes to straightening their teeth is the prospect of having to wear ‘unsightly’ braces. The prospect of a mouthful of metal and elastics can mean that they go through life never achieving the smile they’ve always dreamt of. The good news is that these days there are far more discreet options available when it comes to braces.

One such option is ceramic braces made of clear materials, which are less visible on your teeth than metal braces. They are mainly used with older teenagers and adult patients who prefer a less visible teeth straightening process than that provided by all-metal braces.

Clear braces vs clear aligners

To clear up (excuse the pun) any potential confusion, note that clear ceramic braces are different to Invisalign, another clear alternative to metal braces. Invisalign is a great option for some people, but for others, clear ceramic braces are the best choice.

A consultation with an experienced orthodontist in Sydney or Sydney Dental Clinic will take into consideration a range of factors, including your age, the type of correction needed, the expected duration of treatment and the specifics of your lifestyle. Generally, if larger gaps need to be closed, braces are the preferred method.

When braces are the best choice for you, regardless of whether you opt for the metal or the clear version, the systems available today are significantly more effective, and more pleasant to use, than those of the past. The best modern ceramic braces in Sydney are fully customised to your own personal requirements and tooth movements, and are ‘self-ligating’, which means that they do not require the traditional elastic o-rings around each brace to hold the wire in place. As well as being more comfortable to wear, this has the added benefit of attracting less plaque and being more hygienic.

Clearly better, but at what price?

Better and more discreet treatment must cost more, surely? Actually, no: the best orthodontists recognise that cost should not prevent you from choosing the right product for your needs, and won’t charge you more for clear braces than for traditional all-metal ones.

The greater influence on the price of your treatment will be a range of other factors, including how long it will take to make the necessary changes to straighten the teeth and how severely misaligned they are. To make treatment available to people with a range of budgets, the best orthodontists in Sydney will offer payment plans. You should also check the annual inclusions in your private healthcare for orthodontic treatment in Sydney, and remember that because these rebates don’t roll over, you should make the most of them by booking your first orthodontist appointments before caps re-set at the start of next year.

Teeth straightening, for both teens and adults, can be a cause of some concern, largely due to aesthetic reasons. Fortunately, technological developments in the field of orthodontics means that this need no longer be the case.
