Types of grass how many are there? Which one should I choose? Updated guideby TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom
So that saying is not fulfilled and our lawn grows as green as the neighbor's we have done this guide on the types of grass that exist and which we should choose the best grass seed for new lawn.
If we do not want our grass to be a yellow stubble without color or shine, we cannot throw out any seed and think that it will sprout as if nothing. We have to be clear about certain factors so that it grows strong and green.
What varieties and types of grass are there most common?
Let's see if I can explain with this section, because there are a few types of grass, thousands actually. First we must bear in mind its resistance, both to the soil conditions (the saline, near the sea, make it a bit more difficult) and to the hours of sun that the plant receives and the average temperature in our garden.
Depending on that, you can differentiate two types according to the climate:
· Those of warm climates: that usually have of thick leaf.
· Those of cold and not so cold climates: instead these are usually thin-leafed.
What use am I going to give to my lawn?
But let's dig a little deeper still. Trying to answer the question of the beginning: what do I plan to do with and on my lawn?
I want it with decorative use: for an ornamental function, we have to choose varieties of very fine, dense, dense leaf. Eye, it is not a lawn to be stepped on frequently (better almost never), and the level of care it demands is quite high. Keep it clear: you have to mow it every week at least. The seeds are also more expensive, and the effort takes a little longer to bear fruit. Then it compensates.
I want it for sports use: it is beautiful, but not as much as that of decorative gardens. The good thing is that you enjoy not only your eyesight, but you also resist what you want to do with it. Hold the footsteps, the dog runs, and the balonazos. In addition it treats of varieties more resistant to the plagues, the big enemy of the garden.
For the enjoyment of the whole family: it is a supposed, in fact, similar to the previous one. That means that you are looking for a lawn with ludic pretensions, to move in it, to lie down, so that children can play their pranks. And you will not have too much time to dedicate, that family comes first. It has to be tough.
What type of grass do I choose?
If I'm just going to contemplate it, I'll opt for an ornamental variety with a very fine leaf. If you have to endure the constant trampling, because I plan to play some football matches with friends, then we better choose a sport variety, highly resistant to races, jumps, falls and goals.
As a first conclusion, choosing the right type of lawn is a first step, fundamental, and then enjoy it in all seasons of the year.
Composition of the lawn
From the lawn what we see at first glance is its leaf, so that we are able to differentiate a rustic leaf that is very resistant, but surely less showy than that carpet of intense green color and delicate leaf that adorns the English gardens. But there are more things to see.
The grass, like any plant species, grows from its roots, and grows through the stems. That in the case of its visible part, also called spur, because there is a minimum part of the stem that is kept underground, and in this case it is called a rootstock.
Between both parts is the crown, which is the base of the lawn itself, which opens to the birth of new buds of leaves, in its different varieties, as I said.
The grass, this is a detail that you may not know, also has its flower, which is called panicle. You will only see it if you let it grow without any care, what we could define as a lawn in the wild.
When is the best time to plant grass?
The grass is like life itself. It matters what, how and of course when. We have already talked about the types of grass you can choose, but there are more things to consider, because depending on the varieties of grass, the types of natural grass, you have to act in one way or another at the time of sowing, and also the care that green requires.
Not all grass seeds require the same care, because, as you know, there are many factors to take into account, in addition to that, spinning fine, varieties of lawn for garden that Botany recognizes already go by the ten thousand. That is, imagine how many types of grass there are.
But, broadly speaking, there is a rule that is basically governed by common sense: escape from the cold and heat at the time of sowing. To specify a little, the spring and the beginning of autumn are, depending on the place where you live, the auspicious moments. March, April, September, those are the months most suitable for the sowing of a good natural grass.
You have to take the process seriously: prepare the soil well, aerate it, and choose a good substrate before planting. And keep in mind the hours of sunshine your garden receives. The lawn grass, for example, ideal for dry areas. You have to adapt your care to the kind of seeds you have chosen.
