Types of Foley Catheters you should be aware of

by Dynamix Group Writer

Owing to various health complications, a person may feel difficulty passing urine naturally. For tackling situations like these, the medical sector has introduced many devices and instruments that allow urine to pass out of the body without any effort. Foley catheters stay inserted in the urethra and drains out urine from the bladder whenever required.

It is a thin and flexible tube that can easily be inserted into the urethra. Among all the catheter types, this is most commonly used. The tube has two sections of the same length. While one opens at both ends and drains urine into a collection bag, the other has a valve connected to a balloon at the inside tip. When the Foley balloon is inside the bladder, it stays inflated with sterile water. This stops the catheter from slipping out.

Types of Foley Catheter

Straight Tip Foley Catheters

Straight tip catheters are one of the most common types of Foley catheter. With a small 1.25 inch opening at the end, these catheters have a hydrophilic coating to ensure easy lubrication and reduce pain and discomfort.

Coude Tip Foley Catheters

Coude Tip Foley Catheters got its name from the French word coude, meaning elbow. Coude tip catheters can be recognised from the slight bend near the tip. Patients with enlarged prostate are prescribed to use this. They are specially designed to get past tight spots.

Council Tip Foley Catheters

Council Tip Foley Catheters are passed over a wire which is why the catheter tip has a hole on the top. This type of catheters is most commonly prescribed to patients who are struggling with acute retention in case of emergency situations.

Two-way Foley Catheters

Any basic Foley catheter with two lumens and a balloon at one end is called a Two-way Foley Catheter. These are very helpful as the the strips of these catheters are usually radiopaque which makes it easier to locate while scans.

Three-way Foley Catheters

In case of three-way catheters, there is an extra lumen that helps in infusing an irrigating solution like a sterile saline. This is useful to wash away all blood clots or stains after a surgery.
