Twitter Celebrates 10 Years by Looking Back

Twitter, you’ve never looked better. 

What started out as a humble beginning has become a worldwide phenomenon, and this year it is turning 10 years old. It is hard to imagine a world without Twitter, but the world in fact did live without Twitter during the previous 2,006 years. What a relief it has been. In honor of the big day, Twitter celebrated brands and advertisers. 

Digital marketing firms have always tried to get into the Twitter thing ever since its debut. Twitter has become the go-to place for advertisers and brands to connect with the public in a straightforward kind of way. It has changed advertising and public relations entirely. So it is only fitting that Twitter would celebrate these kinds of tweeters on its birthday. In an article from Marketing Land, Ginny Marvin takes a look at some of the big-time tweeters of the past decade. 

One brand that has certainly conquered the Twitter game is Oreo. Oreo has emerged as a social media pro in the last couple of years, something digital marketing firms crave. The article describes Oreo’s use of real-time conversation to engage audiences and other brands. A featured post in the article is a game of tic-tac-toe to which Kit-Kat challenged Oreo. After Kit-Kat made its move, Oreo responded with a “give me a break.” Oh, Oreo, you slay us. 

The article also talks about the use of hashtags and how they have changed the way people communicate. Indeed, digital marketing firms will often use hashtags to help promote a campaign and get people talking. Individuals have also taken advantage of this crazy new invention. The Black Lives Matter movement all started with a simple hashtag: #blacklivesmatter. Anytime something is going on in the news, a hashtag will most certainly be created for it.  It just goes to show how Twitter and its use of new media have taken conversations to a whole other level. 

From celebrities and politicians to regular everyday folk, Twitter has provided a whole new world for its users, magic carpet and all. Whether someone uses Twitter to actively tweet or see what others are saying, Twitter continually racks in people and new users. As Twitter celebrates its tenth year in business, one can only speculate what the social media platform will become further down the road for both ordinary citizens and digital marketing firms. So make a wish and blow out the candles: Twitter, you have definitely earned it.
