Troubleshoot: Norton Power Eraser Doesn’t Detect Threat on Infected PC

by Katie Jamison Norton Support
Is your Norton Power Eraser software not able to detect any threat while scanning your PC? Are the unwanted sites redirecting on your browser even if the Norton Power Eraser is installed on your system? Well, there might be some problems in the settings which you can check using the below-provided methods. Sometimes scanning cannot help you with detection of either virus and other harmful threat on an infected system. It is because of some settings that need to be checked or changed, so follow each and every step carefully:

Check DNS Settings:

  • Open the Run dialog box using Windows + R.
  • Enter “control” in the given box and hit the Enter button on your keyboard.
  • In the appeared window, select the icon of Network and Internet and click on Network and Sharing Center. In the left pane here click Change Adapter Settings. (Double-click the icon of Network Connection if using Windows XP).
  • Give a right-click on the currently active network adapter and click Properties. Click Yes or Continue if prompted by User Accounts Control.
  • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) in the Network Connection Properties window under “This connection uses the following item”.
  • Hit the Properties button.
  • On the general tab check the DNS server settings in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
    • Check the server addresses, if Use the following DNS server addresses radio button is chosen. Ensure that the displayed DNS server addresses and the one you provided to your Internet service provider or network admin are same.
    • Norton Support would like to inform you that if DNS server address starts with 85.255.11x.x, then the DNS cache has been poisoned as the result of a Pharming attack.

Check Proxy settings:

  • Open the Run dialog box using Windows + R keys on your keyboard.
  • Enter inetcpl.cpl in the given box and then hit Enter.
  • On the Connections tab in the Internet Properties window, click LAN Settings.
  • Check here option of Use a proxy server for your LAN is unchecked if you do not use any proxy servers and if your proxy server then makes sure that all the settings are correct.
  • Hit the OK button and in the window of Internet Options click OK.
