Treatment Options after Unsuccessful Root Canal Treatment

by Stunning Dentistry Stunning Dentistry

A root canal treatment in Delhi is amongst the most widely practiced treatments. In most cases, root canal therapy is successful and the teeth remain healthy for a long time. But, sometimes, even after the treatment, the tooth may not heal properly and cause pain. Pain may reoccur after a few months or a few years even after successful treatment. There may be infection present in the root area and if it remains untreated, the pain may increase and infection may spread to other teeth. The endodontists may plan for retreatment or go for surgical options for treating the failed root canal.

Retreatment

It is the most common option available with a great success rate. In this, the canal is opened again and the previously filled material is removed from the canals. The canals are then cleaned and disinfected. If any canal was not filled previously, then they are filled during the retreatment. This helps in preventing further exposure to bacteria. The endodontist may use a dental microscope to discover narrow canals that are sometimes not visible to the human eye. After a thorough cleaning, the canals are filled and sealed. The retreated tooth works well for years.

Apicoectomy

This procedure is usually performed when there is some blockage in the canal which prevents proper access for cleaning. This procedure is also known as a root-end resection. It is done under anesthesia so that the patient does not feel any pain. A small incision is made in the gums near the root area. The flap is raised to allow easy access to the root. The infected root portion is removed partially or completely. All the inflamed tissue is removed and the area is sealed with a small filling. The area is closed with the help of sutures. The bone around the root generally heals over the months but patient can continue their daily routine from the next day of the surgery.

Extraction

This is the last option available if the root canal treatment fails. It is recommended when the retreatment is not effective or the tooth cannot be restored efficiently. After extraction, the tooth has to be replaced by an implant, bridge, or partial denture so as to restore the normal functioning of the tooth. Tooth replacement is an effective procedure but nothing beats a natural tooth.

The patient has already borne the cost of RCT and will require some convincing for the retreatment. The endodontist will decide the treatment plan after evaluating the tooth. Depending on the nature and the severity of the root canal failure, the endodontist will suggest further treatment.
