Start with a plan

You may be traveling to Japan for the long-awaited vacation to witness the cherry blossoms or moving to the country for employment. It doesn’t matter why you want to learn the language, but if you have decided to tread on that path, then make sure you start with a realistic plan. Don't just enroll in a course without knowing how you are going to approach it. A plan will keep you focused and help you track your progress more reasonably.

Set SMART Goals

In the absence of solid goals, it is very easy to lose track of your mission. SMART goals, aka Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals is the classic trick to get things done. Rather than saying that I want to learn Japanese this month, set a date and follow through. You can also set small milestones like I should be able to order from the Japanese menu by the end of the week or month. By setting clear cut goals, you can realistically work towards that objective without burning out. As far as you are not expecting to be a Japanese Translator within a month, you are good to go!

Learn the Sounds First

Once your goals are set and you have a positive mindset to approach your Japanese studies, it is time to take a nosedive into the course material. But with the sea of material that is your Japanese language course, where should you start?  The best starting point is learning the sounds. Memorize words and what they mean. Try to incorporate them into your daily life so that you remember their meaning and context. Learn the alphabet and read the words and sounds until they no longer seem unfamiliar. Understand the concept behind Hiragana and Katakana. Slow and steady progress will take you to a point where you can read easy Japanese text.

These simple yet actionable tips will work wonders in helping you get a decent grasp of the Japanese language with consistent effort.
