Tips To Ensure Proper Upkeep Of A Car Trailer

by Luis Jimenez Auto Transport And Manufacturing Business
Owning a car hauling trailer can be a great thing, whether it is used for commercial purposes or a private towing business. But just like every other heavy equipment or machinery, it requires effective regular maintenance too. Thus, if you have bought a 4 car hauler or a 5 car one, you have to break a sweat for ensuring its proper upkeep. But it does not mean that the task is extensively overwhelming and tedious. Here a few tips which can help you to get the job done easily and make sure that your trailer stays in tiptop condition for many years:

Maintain The Brakes

Before anything else, you need to know that your trailer’s brakes will be undergoing excessive wear and tear when you use it. Besides that, the drums and brakes can wear out ahead of time if dust particles get accumulated in them. As such, they would demand plenty of maintenance. You must give a thorough wash to these parts every now and then for eliminating the dust that might have collected. And when you have to replace them, change the wheel cylinders, shoes and hardware as well.

Check The Electrical Components

In any kind of car hauling trailer, the electrical parts must operate properly so that unwanted mishaps can be avoided. Therefore, make sure you check your trailer lights meticulously before using the equipment. In case they seem to be faulty, inspect the plug connection. If that does not work out as well, then you either need to get new bulbs or have a wiring issue fixed. Wiring of the lights in a car hauling trailer may, at times, become loose because of heavy vibration or corrode due to extensive usage.

Lubricate The Bearings Properly

When you are applying lubrication to the trailer bearings, have a look at the condition of the spring. If the spring seems extended, keep greasing it. But you must do so by removing the bearings first and then opening them up to reveal the spring.

Grease The Coupler

Although the coupler will not need a lot of maintenance like the other parts of your car hauling trailer, you must check it regularly to ensure that it stays functional. Also, grease it every now and then to prevent stiffening of the latch. You might have to lubricate the tongue jack and locking mechanisms too.

Thus, follow these tips carefully to increase the life of your car trailer.
