Tips for Improving Your French Language Skills

So, you want to improve your French language skills? Maybe you have been learning French for long but could not find the right direction and motivation and end up having a broken fluency in French. Buying language-learning books is not enough. French fluency is not something you can achieve overnight. You should consider learning French in the traditional way. The way we have all learnt speaking our native language. Certainly, joining a French Language Institute in Delhi would be of help, but you need to put a lot of efforts into achieving the native-like fluency. 


Here are some useful tips for Improving Your French Language Skills and remember don’t be afraid of making mistakes, it is the best way to learn. Try anyway!


Watch TV series and movies in French- Listening to French improves pronunciation and enhances the ability to distinguish between words, sentences, etc. watching your favourite series and movies will be fun too as you will be already aware of the plot. Turn on the French subtitles too, it will improve your reading and writing abilities. 


Develop an ear for French music- Whether it’s Jazz, Pop, Hip-hop or Rock, France has the richest music collection in the world. You will be able to use the natural intonation of the French language if you listen as much as French music during your learning process. This will be an added benefit for your speaking section. 


One word at a day- Take out your French dictionary and learn one word every day and put to focus on its spelling, pronunciation, and learn about the situations where to use it effectively. Try using that word in sentences and make sure to get everything checked with your teacher so that you know you are doing it right. 


Stay Connected- Are you regular on social media? Try changing your default language of every social media account that is, Facebook, Twitter, Email account, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc to French. Change settings on your computer too. You already know how the keyboard functions, therefore, it won’t be a difficult task for you. 


Pen Pals- Connect with a French speaker who can help in your writing skills. It is not necessary that you have to write on paper and in the real-time only. You can join French communities on the internet and work on improving your skills with the greatest minds around the world. 


Maintain a French journal- Just write down a few sentences and words that you have learnt in a day. By doing this exercise, you will notice your skills improving gradually. This way, you can keep a check on your progress and plan your next move accordingly. 

Watch news, shopping channels and weather forecasts in French- Shopping channels give you an insight into the products you have interest in. Think about how interesting it would be to know what your desired product called in the French language. This is a great way to pick up the language. Similarly, news and weather forecasts are based on the subjects and the repetitive language that you may have already be aware of. Thus, leaving the ball in your court!
