Tips For Driving An Unfamiliar Vehicle-Muffler Express

by Kevish Hook Web Designer
Even if you are an experienced driver, driving a car you are unfamiliar with can take time to adjust. Invest a few minutes learning your way around the car before you head out into traffic and keep your eye out for car-specific habits, once you start driving.

Do These Four Things Before You Drive Away

Whether you are driving a friend or family member’s car, have just purchased a new car, or are renting a car, you want to do these 4 things before you hit the road.

Adjust Your Seat—make sure the height of your seat and seat back are in a comfortable position and your feet are close enough to the pedals. Even if the seat is comfortable, know where the levers are to adjust your seat if needed.

Adjust The Mirrors—Always adjust the mirrors before adjusting your seat. If you are driving a car you will share with others, you will likely need to do this every time you switch drivers.

Learn The Basics—Before you drive, take the time to learn where the headlights are and how to dim and brighten the headlights and dashboard lighting. Figure out how to operate the windshield wipers and windshield wiper fluid. Also, learn where and how the gearshifts and blinkers work. Familiarize yourself with some of the less used features, such as the horn, opening the trunk and hood, and on which side of the car the gas tank is.

Learn How to Use the Electronic Features—You may not need to use all of the electronic features when driving, but familiarize yourself with how to operate the locks and windows and how to use features, like parking assist or GPS.

Once You Hit The Road

Every car drives differently, and not everyone keeps their car as well-maintained as they should. Once you hit the road, familiarize yourself with how the car drives, steers, stops, starts, and sounds. If the car does not sound or feel safe to drive, pull off the road when it is safe to do so. Remember that some vehicles have been customized. A car with a high performance exhaust system will sound louder than a car with a standard muffler and exhaust.

Drive With More Caution

Any time you drive a new car or vehicle you drive only occasionally, drive with more caution until you feel comfortable with the way it drives.

If you have just started driving a used vehicle, take it to a mechanic to ensure the engine, exhaust system, tires, brakes, and all features are working properly.
