Three steps to take if you have been bitten by a dog

by Naomi M. Freelance Writer

If you have been bitten by a dog, there are three important steps you need to take to protect your physical well-being and also to preserve your legal claim.

1.     1.  Identify the dog – Many victims of dog bites are unable to locate the dog or point to the owner.

If you don’t know who owns the dog, there is no way that you can report the animal to the property authorities.  In addition, you will not know who to seek legal remedies from if you decide to bring a lawsuit.

As a result, following a dog bite, you should remain as calm as possible and try to remember the details of the dog that bit you.

If possible, you should obtain the name and address of the dog owner. You should also find out if the dog has a history of bites.

2.     2.  Seek medical attention – Your first priority following a dog bite is addressing your injuries.  Before calling a lawyer, you will want to call a doctor or 911 depending on the severity of your injuries.

Even if the dog bite seems minor, you should get a professional opinion. The bite may become infected and it may be much more severe than it appears.

After seeking medical treatment, you should photograph and document the extent of your injuries as soon as possible.

You should also write down the exact circumstances leading up to the bite while the events are fresh in your mind.

3.      3, Contact a dog bite attorney – You will want to contact an experienced dog bite attorney to learn your rights to recover damages.

Dog bite laws can be very complex and confusing.  An experienced attorney can help examine the relevant facts of your bite and let you know what steps you need to take to get compensated.

Dog bite injury claims can involve both opposing parties and insurance companies that are notoriously difficult to pay out.

Your attorney will deal with the tough negotiations to ensure that you get what you are owed.
