Three Facts to Know About Nail Care and Treatment

by Kristen White Blogger
Most people don’t think twice about their nails until they get too long and need to be trimmed, but improper care is one of the top causes for discomfort and an avoidable issue with the feet. Nails are exposed to the elements on a daily basis whether it is the open environment with dirt and dust or socks that remain on for hours at a time, trapping bacteria, sweat and other elements directly on the nail. The skin is able to block many of these factors out but the nail can be the ideal location for infections to settle and fester.

Heel pain in Houston is immediately noticeable but problems with the nail may take a little longer to identify as they can appear visually or start as minor issues. Ingrown toenails are one of the most common problems people face and are easy to correct with removal of the portion that is causing the issue.  In some cases, the individual can go to a professional spa for a pedicure and they will expertly groom the feet and address this type of issue. Fungal infections can create discoloration or pain in the nail bed area when it enters into the skin through cuts or open sores around the feet.

Over-the-counter meds can be used if caught early before the infection gets too deep into the nail or skin; otherwise, individuals should see a podiatrist in Houston as soon as possible to get in-depth treatment. If left uncared for, the infection can create serious medical issues that can spread through the body and then more extensive treatment would be needed to bring the person nail back to a healthy state.

Hematomas are often seen in athletes or those with an active lifestyle as they are caused by friction rubbing between the big toe and the sock or shoe. Wearing footwear that is too small can also contribute to this issue developing so it is important to be mindful of how a shoe fits in resting and active positions so that the feet are comfortable and given room for natural movement. If a hematoma develops on the toe then it can be drained by creating a small hole in the area. The same action is performed if it forms under the nail but should only be done by an experienced foot doctor with the proper tools, equipment and knowledge of the procedure. Removal of the nail can be a possibility if the area is not healing properly and if the issue has become too severe to be treated by draining. This allows the podiatrist to go in and clean the nail bed to avoid any infection from developing and create an outlet for the blood to drain.

Nails can be painted or simply trimmed and maintained but it is important to keep them clean regularly and wear proper shoes for any activity. They are a small part of the foot but can have a big impact on someone’s daily life when every step is painful or there is the appearance of an issue that needs to be taken care of.
