Things to Know about Radiator Flush

by Kevin Smith Author

There are many different maintenance procedures to keep track of for your vehicle, but making sure your vehicle is properly maintained means that you'll spend less on repairs and your vehicle will last a few years longer. An important service that auto shops providing full repair service in Decatur offer is a transmission flush. You may not know much about this service, so here's some information you may find helpful.

What's a Radiator Flush?

Your vehicle's radiator plays a vital role in preventing the engine from overheating. It uses antifreeze to pick up excess heat from the engine and then the coolant is cooled down further so that it can be sent back to the engine to transfer more heat. After time, the antifreeze in the radiator gets dirty and this dirt can cause deposits to build up and eventually clog the cooling system. Flushing the radiator helps keep the cooling system in good condition by removing the old coolant and replacing it with new.

Flushing Process

The flushing process begins by draining out all the coolant. The drain plug is replaced and the radiator cap removed. A flushing solution is added to the radiator, the cap is replaced, and the car runs for a while in order to move the solution throughout the radiator. When the engine is cooled the solution is drained and new coolant is placed in the radiator.

Is Flushing Better Than Draining?

Draining the radiator removes many of the contaminants; however, a flush is best because it ensures all the old, contaminated antifreeze is removed. Simply draining the radiator can leave up to half of the old antifreeze as well as the contaminants it contained.

Benefits of A Radiator Flush

A major benefit of a radiator flush is that along with removing contaminants, built up rust and scale in the radiator will be flushed out too. This increases the lifespan of your radiator and helps prevent overheating. In addition, the water pump will last longer because the coolant can lubricate the water pump in your vehicle as well. When you take your vehicle to a shop providing full repair service in Decatur for a radiator flush, you can rest assured that your entire cooling system will be inspected along with the flush to make sure there aren't any leaks or other problems. Finally, replacing all the antifreeze in your radiator gives additional protection against rust and build up.
