Things To Check Before Calling a Garage Repair Service.

by Qarah Ict Qarah ICT

Garage door repairs are often done by the homeowner. Some repairs are simple. For example, a squeaky or stiff door will require good cleaning and lubrication. Other repairs, such as a torsion spring, are incredibly harmful and need help from a professional. Before calling a professional, there are at least five simple things to check.

Before proceeding to the repair, ensure to unplug your garage door opener so that you don't get an electric shock while you are repairing your garage door. Also, ensure you wear safety glasses when working with power tools.

Below is a list of things to check before calling for an expert for your garage door repair:

  • Check the Metal Tracks for Damages

The metal tracks often may have bumps or dents. If you find any such damage, hit the damaged part of the track with a hammer and a wood block to straighten the path. This easy garage door repair tip may often solve the problem very fast.

  • Clean and Dry the Tracks

Even though it may sound obvious, hardened dirt and old lubricant may cause the garage door to stick. In this case, your garage door repair may consist of merely cleaning and drying the tracks. You can use normal cleaners to clean the tracks.

  • Check the Alignment of the Tracks

If the tracks are not aligned right, they may be causing the door not to operate well. Use a level to inspect the alignment of the tracks. Instead of unscrewing the tracks, you can try to loosen the bolts or screws and tap the ways slightly into position. Aligned tracks will let you finish your garage door repair quickly.

  • Lubricate the Tracks and the Rollers

Merely lubricating the tracks and rollers can solve the problem and quickly conclude your garage door repair. For lubrication, you may use a silicon spray or lubricant spray. It is better to lubricate the tracks after cleaning them. Any movable part will benefit from lubrication.

  • Tightening the Loose Screws and Bolts

Screws and bolts tend to become loose with time. Check all the screws and bolts in your door's opening/closing mechanism. Sometimes, simply tightening them may fix the entire problem. If you cannot screw up the screws because the holes have become loose, you can use a "wood filler" or pieces of regular wood to fill the gaps.

  • What Not to Do?

If you have tried each of the above solutions and none worked, the problem may be the door spring. However, it is advised not to repair your garage door if the problem is the spring, especially if it's a torsion spring. Unfortunately, there have been numerous cases where garage door springs have injured or even killed people. One of the most regular injuries is a hit in the head, resulting in severe trauma to the brain.

If you doubt your garage repair, you should not attempt it. It generally will not cost too much. However, an expert will save you from any injuries.

At Garage Door Guru, we make sure you get fast, prompt attention to your garage door needs- whether you have a broken spring, loose cables, your garage door remote or button won't work, or anything else urgent.
