Theater System Design

Who doesn’t love going to the movies?  Seeing something on the big screen, with an awesome sound system delivering the best quality sound, is an experience that’s usually worth the price of admission.  Even if the movie isn’t that great, its still usually well presented.

But what about watching movies at home?  Everything leaves the theater eventually, and watching movies at home is a popular past time, so how can you replicate that experience on a much smaller screen in a much smaller room?

First you need to understand that theater system design takes the size and budget of movie theaters into account, but there’s more to it than that.  More important than the quality of sound in the movie itself, or in the budget an individual theater has for a sound system, is how that theater is built.  The way theaters are built, as well as the materials that are used, have a significant impact on how movies sound.  The wrong kind of structure can result in sound getting absorbed or, worse, deflected into areas where nobody is sitting.  Similarly, some materials absorb or deflect more sound than others.  So when theaters are built, they are designed to minimize sound loss.

Listening room design in your own home needs to follow the same basic philosophies.  With the wrong materials or a poorly designed space, or both, even the highest quality sound system is going to sound bad.  Sound systems aren’t cheap, so you want to get the maximum value from your purchase.  By making some changes to the room you use for your home entertainment, you can do exactly that.

There are numerous websites that offer tons of information about how to maximize the sound quality of your home theater, but what if you just can’t wrap your head around acoustics?  Or what if you’re not very handy, or don’t have the time to invest in such a project?  Well there are professionals for just about everything, and home theaters are no exception.  You can find companies throughout the country who can visit your home and inspect the space you’re using for your home theater.  They can establish what works and what doesn’t work about the space, and tell you what you need to do to fix it.  Some will even do the work themselves, it might cost more than doing it yourself, but you can bet that it will be done the right the first time, and in much less time, than if you try to build a home theater on the weekends.
