The Ultimate Guide to Hemp Body Oils and Whether to Use Them

At various online stores, you must have seen hemp body oils on sale. All these oils, whether essential or seed oils, are sourced from hemp plant. There are various types of such oils depending on the purpose and use. The common types are CBD oil, seed oil and essential oil. Each of these oils is extracted in a different way.

The hemp essential oil:

This oil is sourced from the upper flowers and leaves of hemp plant. These flowers and leaves are steam distilled in order to capture the plant’s pure essence. The hemp essential oil is among the most expensive oils as it needs more than fifty pounds of the flowers and leaves to produce just one ounce of the essential oil. Hemp seed oil:

As the name suggests, this hemp oil comes from hemp plant seeds. Hemp seed oil may be processed in two ways; cold-pressed and unrefined. The oil has green color and has nutty flavor. The hemp oil which is cold pressed tends to preserve the nutritious content of hemp, and is one of the oils which are perfectly balanced. Its shelf life is limited and must be stored in refrigerator after it has been opened. On the other hand, the refined hemp seed oil is colorless and clear, lacks the antioxidants and natural vitamins which hemp is known form and does not have much flavor. The refined hemp oil is mostly used one of the ingredients for plastics, lubricants, fuel and body care products.


Hemp CBD oil:

CBD is an abbreviation for Cannabidiol. CBD oil is basically a non-psychoactive cannabinoid which is derived from the hemp, plants and is mostly for medical uses.


Choosing the right oil:


Of these the types, the hemp body oils described from hemp seed oil are the most popular, and the following are some of their benefits –


  • It contains Omega 6 essential fatty acids and Omega 3 in the ratio of 3:1, a perfect balance for use on the body.

  • It contains traces of stearidonic acid, oleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). These are generally known as polyunsaturated fatty acids.

  • The oil is rich in vitamins A and E.

  • The oil has high content of minerals such as zinc, iron, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, magnesium and calcium.

  • It is very good for the skin. It helps get rid of dry skin and in treatment of psoriasis and eczema.

  • It promotes development of healthy nails and hair.

  • Helps reduce inflammation in the body.

  • It does not contain sugar, sodium, proteins, carbohydrates or cholesterol.


In buying, you should be guided by the intended use of the hemp oil. Do you want to use it as additive to the daily diet or just as a dressing? Do you intend to apply it on your skin? If you intend to drink or eat hemp oil, go for the unrefined.
