Abortion is the most effective process to terminate the pregnancy up to 20 weeks of gestation. It is a process where removal of tissues is done which does not result in the birth of a child. Sometimes women are not mentally or physically healthy to raise a child and terminates her unplanned pregnancy. Abortions have now become a quite common and secure process.

It is not an easy decision but can be considered a wise choice in the following situations:
  • When a couple is not ready to be parents.

  • When there are chances of mental and physical abnormalities to a newborn.
  • Due to financial instability.
  • Too old to have a baby.
  • Too young to have a baby.
  • When a woman wants to focus more on her career and work.
  • When a woman is not sharing a good relationship with her partner.

How is abortion performed?

At the first, a doctor confirms the pregnancy and then ultrasound tests are done to examine the stage of pregnancy. After evaluation, a suitable method is performed to terminate the unwanted childbirth. The two effective methods are as follows:

Medical Abortion: It is basically treated with the abortion pills named misoprostol and mifepristone. It is suggested up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. One pill is taken right at the hospital and the other is consumed within a gap of 24 to 48 hours to end the childbirth. Pills are used to stop the growth of a baby in a female body. No surgery or anaesthesia is required under this process.

If a woman is 10 weeks or more into her gestational period, then she is not eligible for medical abortion.  It is best recommended for early pregnancy (first trimester) stage.

Surgical Abortion: It is generally performed in 14 to 16 weeks of gestation. In this process, minor surgery is done to empty the tissues of pregnancy from the mother’s womb. The two methods of surgical abortion procedure are as follows:

Vacuum Aspiration: A doctor uses a suction tube into the cervix and the tissues of pregnancy are taken out. It is done up to 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E): A doctor broadens the cervix using medical forceps and removes the contents with the help of a suction tube. It is done after 15 weeks of gestation.
