THE SKILL OF CONTROLLING ANXIETY ATTACKS

by Evelyn Martha mental health

Anxiety attacks have become an increasingly common place issue. Hypertension, stress, emotional setbacks, career failings, weakness, blood pressure issues, menopause, and even ill sleep patterns may be the cause for anxiety attacks amongst a variety of people today. Hence, controlling anxiety attacks in the need of the hour.  However, controlling anxiety attacks may not be an easy task and thus they take a lot of thought, determination and skill that sufferers usually gain over a period of time.

Tracing the origins of the attack helps majorly. This means increased awareness of one’s own feeling. The sooner a person gets to know of the attack, the easier it gets to resolve the ill effects of his/her anxiety. When a person senses the onset of attack they may start to focus on their breathing to try and divert their mind away from getting drawn towards their anxiety. Also, one can talk themselves out of it by whispering words of strength such as ‘I can do it’, or even chant religious words in order to get a sense of themselves which would help them in controlling anxiety attacks.

Another way to evolve out of the problem can be psychotherapy. One may visit a trusted psychiatrist and talk in details regarding their issues and gain advice on how to overcome their fears that result in sweating, disturbed concentration, nausea and even trembling. Therapy gives a better sense of the problem to one’s own self and can thus be very helpful. There are also tricks fro hypnotic understanding and resolution that may be adopted for controlling anxiety attacks.

Yoga is also a very potent aspect in controlling anxiety attacks. It is the synchronization of the body, mind and breath and hence leads to heightened concentration and greater mental control and strength in a person. Also, it is said to stimulate the chakras in our body that give strength and are also responsible for releasing hormones that affect our thoughts and mind. Yoga releases something generally known as the happy hormone that has an increasingly calming and pleasant effect upon the mind of the individual. This is one of the reasons why we feel so relaxed and at peace after a yoga session, be it physical or mental exercise.

Medical science has also devised a large number of drugs and medicines that help in controlling anxiety attacks. Some of them include anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs and injections, and even beta blockers. These create a calming effect upon the mind and numb down the impact of the attack. However, they have a lot of side effects, specially heart related issues and also cause hormonal imbalances. They may also make one feel dizzy and nauseous. Also, they are no permanent solution and are prescribed only as immediate detriment but not complete cure.

Talking to oneself, and also discussing your issues with a family member or a close person may help one mitigate the effect of anxiety attacks because it leads to self realization and reflection on the part of the individual which gradually helps one to recognize and control these attacks.
