The Revolution of Online Marketing: The Internet of Things

by Fusion 360 Studios Digital Marketing Specialists

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that refers to Internet connectivity for any kind of device through wireless communication. IoT includes everyday objects and how they are used in our daily lives. This includes devices such as cell phones, computers, tablets, as well as machines or even airplane engines. So how is this concept changing marketing agencies and the way we manage online marketing

IoT has created high expectations for costumers’ convenience, making it crucial that marketing caters to those expectations. With the Internet being such an accessible asset in our everyday lives, we as consumers have high expectations—and if they aren’t met, we assume the product isn’t worth the time or effort.

If marketing agencies are capable of keeping up with this technological revolution, IoT can help improve marketing. However, IoT can have a negative affect on marketers if they fail to meet these expectations of on-demand services everywhere.

IoT is predicted to deepen the relationship between consumers and marketers as data grows. Since marketers love their data, they will also love IoT because increased connectivity will lead to more data and smarter data. In fact, some analysts predict that by 2020 there will be more than 13 billion connected devices, showing no limits to information through IoT.

While marketing used to revolve around visibility, IoT has changed the way of target marketing, allowing marketers to not only target specific demographics but also predict solutions relevant to individual users of a product.

This means that IoT’s connectivity to all devices will enable marketing agencies to offer specific solutions to thing-related problems. For example, if you’re driving an Internet-connected car and your oil needs to be changed, the car will direct you to a local car service shop. This type of target marketing allows marketers to predict and deliver solutions relevant to the needs of a consumer.

Because everything today is marketable, IoT will drive marketing agencies along with our everyday interactions and behaviors.

Social media has also converged with IoT, creating huge social marketing opportunities. Marketing used to be about physical and visual campaigns but has now transformed into “social” things, creating an opportunity for marketing agencies to create better and more useful experiences for their users.

When it comes to the Internet of Things, as connectivity grows, so do expectations. All devices are quickly becoming interconnected, allowing marketers to acquire a limitless amount of data to respond to consumer needs with products, services and solutions. IoT is the revolution of an extremely interconnected world that is changing the ways of online marketing forever.
