Cleaning before Storing

If the clothes have some dirt or stain on it, it is always better to clean and iron them up as the dirt will settle down over time and it will be difficult to remove it afterward. Dirty clothes also attract insects and moths which can damage your possessions.

  • Using Vacuum

When it comes to cleaning, washing the clothes is not the only solution. If there are some dust particles or fluff on the clothes and the rest of it is clean, then don’t go for washing, a simple hand vacuum can do the work for you.

  • Washing the clothes

Vacuuming will not work if the clothing is dirty and filthy. In such a case, washing the clothes before storage is a good option. Do take care that the color of the clothes doesn’t run. If a cloth needs gentle cleaning then hand washing it is better than throwing the clothes in washing machine.

  • Dry Clean

Some textile materials are delicate or fragile in nature and can’t be simply washed by machine or hands. In such cases, getting the clothes drycleaned is the best option possible.

Packing Process

Packing of the clothes can’t be done in any box or container as precautions must be taken to keep the clothes in good condition and to protect them from moths, insects, and mice.

  • Using acid-free boxes

Acid-free boxes are really good for storing the textiles as it keeps the quality of fabric intact and does not damage or discolor it. If you are using any other container, then it’s good to line the box or container with the acid-free papers.

  • Don’t use a vacuum or plastic bag

Putting the clothing in a vacuum bag means no air contact of clothes and fabrics needs air to retain its quality and structure. On the other hand, plastic bags can trap moisture which causes dullness in color and also results in the formation of mildew. So, it is better to wrap the clothing with a clean breathable fabric like cotton.

  • Folding as against Hanging

Pack the clothes by properly ironing and folding them instead of hanging. Hanging can cause excess pressure on certain parts of the cloth which delicate fabrics can’t handle and can get stretched or damaged.

  • Using Cedar Balls

Mothballs do the work of protection against moth but also leave some unwanted smell on clothes. So, use cedar balls as these can prevent moths and don’t smell terribly.

Storing in a cool and humidity-free place

The atmospheric conditions like excessive heat or humidity can deteriorate the textiles. If your packed boxes are exposed to ultraviolet rays then excess heat can cause the breaking down of textile fibers. Humidity or a musty place can also cause damage to the integrity of fabrics. So, always choose a place for storing which is cool, dark, as well as dry.

Overall, fashion storage is not really a big task to perform. Just follow the above-listed tips and when you unpack your clothing, you’ll get them in the same condition as before, without any quality degradation.
