The Need to Become Leaders in Sustainability

Sustainability can be defined in a lot of ways but in the simplest terms sustainability is basically the ability to keep up a certain level of progress and development without harming the sociological framework within which we function. Talking about the modern world it is extremely necessary to think about sustainability seriously.  Becoming leaders in sustainability in various fields and faculties in today’s modern world has become imperative and essential.

Why do we Need Sustainability?

In the field of business, a sustainable business is simply a green business.  What does a green business offer?

·         A green business has extremely low negative implications on the environment, society, community and economy.

·         It tries to follow the environmental and human right policies and also works hard to follow the “Triple Bottom Line” or 3BL of business values which includes the social, economical and environmental factors.

·         A sustainable business thus tries to ensure that its activities are profitable not only economically but also in the larger scheme of things.

Theory of triple Bottom Line Regarding Business Sustainability

The Triple Bottom Line or the TBL/3BL theory was coined by John Elkington in 1997 in his book called the Cannibals with Forks: the Triple Bottom line of 21st century Business.  The concepts of TBL as said earlier include the three paradigms of Economy, Environment and Society. Each of these three is quite important for sustainability in business and an enterprise which follows these three principles is thought of as following a sustainable business model.

·         Society: The inclusion of society into the functioning of an enterprise does away with the idea of an enterprise which works only for its own benefit. Rather it is an enterprise that will prove to be an agent of change and a means of mobilizing awareness. The aim is to try to work for society by including the privileged and underprivileged strata.

·         Environment: The second concept of the TBL is safeguarding the environment. Any corporate organization depends heavily on the ecological factors that boost its production and also, to some extent, its sales. Therefore, to become leaders in sustainability, the onus is on the organizations to actively contribute to restoring the ecological balance which has been harmed and abused by centuries of misuse.

·         Economy: The last concept of TBL is economy. An economic burst leads many to believe in the illusion of prosperity. What it does not ensure, in any way, is sustainability in business. It is only a means of sporadic and impulsive growth that cannot last for long. This kind of growth negatively affects the employment security of millions who depend on the corporate sector.

It is remarkable to see how these three aspects of sustainable development in the corporate domain are interconnected. To ascertain the long term growth of an enterprise along with its ability to co exist and facilitate growth in other sectors of society, it must incorporate new ideas and agendas into its functioning.

In today’s world, the most prosperous corporate giants continue to be those who have accepted and acknowledged the fact that they do not exist in isolation.
