You were out on a holiday and you just returned home after a week. As soon as you entered, you found the cupboard open with piles of clothes lying on the floor. You take a closer look inside and your heart just skipped a beat. Your precious jewellery has been robbed.

The only thing you do now is filing a police complaint. But, the witty thieves didn’t leave any pieces of evidence behind. Now, that’s one good reason to panic, isn’t it?

So, how do you keep a check on what happened on your property while you were not around? It’s simple. Install a surveillance system, and what’s better than a CCTV camera? However, several types of CCTV cameras are presently available and you need to choose one based on your personal requirement.

Listed below are some of the most popular types that you need to know about:

Dome camera

This is the most common type found in almost all retail stores, organizations and even high-profile homes. They are named so due to the dome-shaped structure that they are fitted into. Unlike the ones that are usually hidden, these can be easily spotted and are usually fitted onto the ceiling, in most cases, just above the entrance of a premise.

Bullet camera

A bullet camera is generally mounted on a wall or a ceiling. They can be used outdoors or indoors. Its cylindrical shape is what makes them known by the name ‘bullet’. Most of the present-day bullet cameras are waterproof. However, they lack zoom or tilt capability and therefore are meant to capture only a fixed area.

Infrared / Night Vision cameras

These are meant to capture suspicious activities during the night when there is no light at all. These cameras consist of IR LEDs that make this functionality possible. In most cases, these cameras are fitted onto a moving object. Forest rangers make use of night vision cameras while they are on an inspection drive. Army vehicles and air crafts also have specialized night vision cameras installed.

Day / Night Cameras

These are quite similar to the night vision cameras but with an added advantage. A Day / Night camera is capable of adjusting the video quality based on the varying light conditions. They are mostly used outdoors in areas like parking lots, parks, and gardens.

Speed Dome cameras

Unlike the standard dome cameras, these come with a zoom capability and can turn from left to right, top to bottom, offering a complete 360° security. A speed dome camera usually requires a live guard to monitor the images and the video footage that captures every moment to track suspicious activities. The camera can also adjust itself based on the level of lighting available.

IP cameras

An IP camera makes use of the internet to transmit images in a compressed format. Compared to other types of cameras, these are much easier to install as they do not require a separate set of cables. An IP camera comes bundled with a software application that needs to be installed onto a computer in order to be able to access the images and footages.
