The Lowdown on Window Tinting (Dos and Don’ts)

by Tint Fx Home, Glasses, Window, Tinting

With temperatures rising year after year, homeowners find themselves in a constant state of battling higher energy costs. To keep things comfortable inside, they have been forced to run their cooling systems longer and keep their air con turned down to a low setting. While this has alleviated the discomfort of the summer months, it has been really uncomfortable budget-wise. On top of the warming trends, consumers have also had to deal with rising global energy costs due to world events.

To make their homes comfortable again, and to lower their regular energy bills, more and more consumers have turned to solar window film. This form of window tinting can dramatically lower the inside temperature, cutting between 5 and 95% of both infra-red and visible light. It also reduces up to 82% of the solar energy, which in turn should translate into saving up to 30% on your monthly utility bills. As with any other product, there are some dos and don’ts you should know about if you are thinking of installing solar window film in your home.

What is the Best Surface?

This type of window tinting will work best, and also have the longest lasting lifespan, when you apply it to glass. It will give you the performance you need, and the protection from solar energy and heat, when applied to the glass windows in your home.

Can I Apply It to Plexiglass?

Some window-like surfaces in a home could be made out of plexiglass. This could be the case with a skylight. Standard window tinting is not designed for plexiglass, but there is a skylight window treatment that would work.

One of the reasons is that plexiglass releases chemicals from the product itself, a process called outgassing. This affects the bond with the window tinting, and could even cause you to have to replace your plexiglass if you don’t use the right type of tinting.

How About Textured Glass?

Window tinting should not be applied to glass that is textured, because the surface that it is applied to needs to be smooth. If you tried to apply it to a textured surface, the physical bond and performance of the tinting would not be satisfactory.

Do the Windows Need to Be Cleaned Before Tinting?

Before you install tinting on your home’s windows, they should be spotless. Clean windows help assure that the tinting adheres to the window properly. In addition, if you had marks or streaks on a window, they would be unsightly and show up under the tinting.
