The importance of particle size analysis in various industries

by Groshan Fabiola I try to cover as many topics as I can
Every industry that has to deal with the production or manufacture of different products knows the importance of particle size analysis. This process has the purpose to examine in detail the particles in a sample. The materials could range between powders, like pigments and pharmaceutical ingredients, emulsions and suspensions like milk and sprays like asthma inhalers. Particle size analysis is critical because it can determine the performance and the efficiency of the final product. For this reason, many industries resort to this test in order to understand and improve the production, which allows them to beat the competition and for quality control.  For instance, in the pharmaceutical industry, this process is necessary in order to establish and control possible chemical reactions of various drugs. As a result, they become acceptable for individual use.

Besides the presence of chemicals in a certain product, the physical properties of the particles can influence the behavior of the product in question. Thus, the measurement of several important physical properties including the microstructure, the size and the shape of the particles, the surface and mechanical properties must be made. Of all these factors, particle size is the most required by various industries because of its great effect on the final product. Practically, regardless the type of product, it has the power to influence the flow ability, the texture, the viscosity, the appearance and more. If you want to obtain a high-quality product and improve your game on the market, then you must be aware and understand the particle size influence on the production process.

Particle size characterization involves different techniques and methods that can be applied to a large variety of products or only for certain products with specific applications. In order to choose the most adequate method of particle size analysis, which is essential for a satisfying result, you have to be familiar with the benefits and limitations of each technique. You must know very well the manufacture process that leads to your final product. In addition, you have to take into consideration several aspects and ask yourself a series of questions including the importance of each particle property, the particle size you need to rework, the speed you can make the measurements and an equally important detail, the money you are able to invest.

One of the most popular techniques used for particle size is laser diffraction, which can be applied to all types of samples from aerosols and dry powders to emulsions and suspensions. This technique is very fast and effective and can measure exactly any sample, regardless of its size, not to mention that it can influence the product appearance. However, when it comes to analyzing particles, you can still benefit from other methods. For large particles, the best and the oldest option is sieving while Dynamic Light Scattering is ideal for small particles because it is easier to use and non-invasive. In conclusion, the techniques that are part from the particle size analysis can help any manufacturer increase the efficiency of the production process and ensure a high-quality product.
