The Evolution of Toyota Tundra

by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

The Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup truck revealed in May 1999 and is now in its third and current generation model which was released in 2014. The Tundra is an impressive car with good quality, performance, durability, and reliability. It also comes with plenty of safety features and can be used as an occasional or regular work truck, with off-roading capability.

First Generation

The Toyota Tundra was introduced in 1999 until 2006 with either a regular or extended-cab body. The extended cab has two rear-facing doors with shortbeds while the regular-cab models come with longbed bodies. The front-seat passengers had enough space but in the rear seat, the space was limited.

The Tundra came fitted with a 4.0L V6 petrol engine and a 4.7L V8 petrol engine mated with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission while the V8 engine was only available with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Second Generation

The second-generation Tundra was released in 2007, giving birth to a full-size truck. It has a sturdy frame with three cab lengths, three-bed lengths, three wheelbases, three engines, and two transmissions.

The CrewMax is tall and flat, which was the largest of the three cabs and the roomiest interior at the time with a 5.5-feet bed. The 4-door medium-size Double Cab comes with an extended cab with a 6.5-feet bed and the 2-door Regular-cab has an 8-feet bed. Standard features include stability control and side curtain airbags, with an optional backup camera, a bed rail system, and extendable towing mirrors.

The Tundra was fitted with a 5.7L V8 petrol with 381 hp, 4.7L V8 petrol with 276 hp, and 4.0L V6 with 236 hp, paired to either a five or six-speed automatic transmission.

Third Generation

The current generation Tundra was produced in 2013 with still three available body styles: the Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Max. The exterior visibly changes including a newly redesigned front fascia with an expansive and brighter grille, a new tail- and headlights, redesigned flared fenders, and a new “TUNDRA” stamped tailgate. The interior comes with redesigned instrument cluster and is fitted with Toyota’s Entune infotainment system with smartphone connection services and USB port.

The 2013 Tundra is powered by the same engine, the 4.0L V6 engine with an extra 34 hp to increase its power to 270 hp. The 2014 Tundra TRD Pro Series special edition featured a redesigned grille and badge, a specially tuned raised suspension, TRD rims, a new orange shade, skid plate, off-road tires, and other extra features.

Generally

The Toyota Tundra has evolved from an outsider on the full-size pickup truck to becoming one of the top-selling and popular pickup trucks in the automotive sector. The Tundra’s reliability, quality, durability, capability, and ruggedness make it more appealing to the consumers.
