The Difference Between Social Media Management and Casual Posting

by Jeremy Banks Evolutesix
A lot of times, business-owners forego hiring a professional digital marketing agency thinking that managing accounts on social media is easy breezy. What they neglect to realize, however, is that posting on your brand’s social media pages shouldn’t be treated as casually as posting on personal profiles.

This isn’t posting about your latest family reunion or updating the world about what you had for lunch; posting as a brand entails you to have a clear understanding of your target market, their language, what kind of content works with them, and most importantly, knowing how to maximize the data Facebook gives you.

Social Media

Here are some of the skills that great social media managers have that differentiate them from your average Facebook poster.

  1. Good Copywriting

How many times have you come across what would have been an interesting page but got turned off once you saw that the captions were plain and boring, or worse yet, misspelled and/or lacking punctuation? While this would be forgivable if it were personal posts, remember that when it comes to social media for business, your posts are representative of your brand. The reliability of your brand is reflected in the quality of your copy.

Going beyond technicalities, creating copy that expresses personality and that matches the target market’s language is crucial. If you’re marketing to teenagers, for example, throwing in slang terms with every other phrase will likely be not enough and only sound unnatural and strange. It takes experience and work to masterfully adapt to different markets’ different language preferences.

  2. Ability to Create Visual Materials

As much as words rule a large part of social media use, statistics continue to show that users are more likely to engage with posts that include an image or a video. That said, it is highly recommended that good writing be matched with visual materials.

With a skilled and experienced social media manager, you can trust that you won’t have to outsource your  visual needs somewhere else; part of any social media manager’s training is creating images and videos that fit with the trends and restrictions of social media, not to mention match the copy well.

  3. Able to Engage With Customers

As much as technology and marketing has changed, customer support remains an important aspect in business, and with social media, maintaining contact with your customers has gotten a whole lot easier. With that, quality of support should keep up, too.

Apart from providing empathy when needed, well-trained social media managers are masters at responding to less-than-enthusiastic comments online with grace. More importantly, they can spot potential UGC (user generated content) from a mile away, providing your page with another great opportunity for customer engagement.

  4. Knows How to Utilize Data

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other big social media platforms provide marketers and business pages with analytical tools for a reason - so that business owners know the performance of their content and any necessary adjustments can be made.

A good social media manager doesn’t only produce output, they also know how to make use of any information on their market available to make sure that the content is effective and initiates the desired response from the audience.

  5. Understands the Uniqueness of Your Brand

Each business has its own vision for its brand. It takes a keen eye and good training for a social media manager to be able to adapt to different businesses’ different personalities. A deep understanding of what makes a business different and which aspects make great selling points make all the difference.

Rules

There is definitely a lot to consider when it comes to business social media marketing, and trusting it to a reliable manager will prove to be one of the best investments a business, whether large or small, can make.
