The Benefits of Deep Sleep and how Wool Helps

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

It is universally acknowledged and scientifically proven that regular, deep sleep is good for everyone. It encourages cell regeneration and is vital for general good health.

There are five stages of sleep that we all go through. The process starts with a dreamy and light sleep that normally lasts about 5-10 minutes, progresses to a slightly deeper sleep for a further 20 minutes or so, then goes through a transition stage until we reach deep sleep. This stage is the most important for repairing and regenerating cells and generally lasts about 30 minutes before returning to the transition stage and then cycling back to deep sleep.

The fifth stage is REM (rapid eye movement) sleep where dreams result from increased brain activity. The deep, regenerative sleep is the most beneficial, but the cycle can be interrupted if you’re not comfortable due to being too warm, too cold or for other reasons. An Australian wool quilt can be crucial in achieving the maximum amount of beneficial sleep because wool has been proven to increase deep, regenerative sleep by around 25%.

The Way an Australian Wool Underlay or Quilt Improves Sleep

The original purpose of wool is to keep the sheep comfortable — dry and at just the right temperature. When used in a quilt or underlay, it does the same for occupants of a bed:

1.       Wool fibres maintain a steady temperature by allowing air to flow freely. Excess heat is released through the fibres while sufficient body heat is retained to ensure occupants don’t get cold. Wool is also able to maintain micro-climates so that those who are warm sleepers remain cool and a cold sleeper in the same bed is sufficiently warm.

2.       In the same way that sheep are kept dry when out in all weather, sleepers are spared the excessive humidity that can sometimes occur in bed. If you perspire in bed, wool helps you cool down naturally by drawing moisture away whereas other materials, such as feathers and synthetic fillings, trap the moisture and cause a humid environment.

3.       Some fillings can cause allergic reactions and encourage the presence of dust mites. Wool, however, is naturally hypoallergenic, which means it is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Lanolin, which occurs naturally in wool and is a common allergen, is removed during processing because it is a valuable ingredient for make-up and moisturisers. And wool is too dry for dust mites, which like a warm and humid atmosphere.

Our wool quilts are available in a variety of sizes and weights so you can find the perfect one for you. They’ll all help you get that perfect night’s sleep and wake completely relaxed — naturally.
