Wireless charging offers smartphone users the convenience of recharging their mobile devices without the mess and safety risks of cables. So it is no surprise that Android immediately jumped on the wireless charging bandwagon, with the Samsung Galaxy S6 being the most popular among its Qi-enabled devices.

As of this writing, Apple has not yet released an iPhone with a built-in wireless charging capability. Nonetheless, iPhone users have the option to use an accessory such as a dedicated charging case so that they can power up their iPhone with a wireless charging pad.

Android vs. Apple

Until Apple finally incorporates wireless charging in its latest model, all people can do in the meantime is to rely on third-party accessories to enable inductive charging on their iPhones.

Amid all these talks about smartphone charging technology, one question comes to mind: are Android users really at an advantage over iPhone users when it comes to wireless charging?

Let’s take a look at the advantages and drawbacks of wireless charging on iPhones and Android phones to see which of them provide more convenience and better value to their respective markets.

Android Wireless Charging

Pros:

  • Most Android devices, especially the latest models, already have wireless charging capability built in them, so there is no need to buy a separate accessory.
  • Some Android devices (like the Galaxy S6) come with a matching wireless charger, so you do not have to buy one from a third-party supplier.

Cons:

  • If you use an older Android model, the wireless charging receiver adapter patch may cause your device to become bulkier, making it difficult to fit in the wireless charging pockets of cars.
  • The use of this wireless charging patch may cause your phone to bulk up at the back, causing your device to become wobbly while it’s being charged.

iPhone Wireless Charging

Pros:

  • There are a lot of wireless charging accessories (particularly charging cases) that are made for iPhones, so you will never run out of options.
  • Charging cases are easy to attach to iPhones. All you have to do is to snap one on your iPhone, and it is ready to be recharged with any wireless charger.

Cons:

  • iPhones, even the latest iPhone 7, have no built-in wireless charging feature. This means iPhone users still have to spend extra on getting a Qi or PMA-compatible case to make their phone work with wireless chargers.
  • Charging cases add bulk to the iPhone and block the Lightning port, which makes it hard for users to listen to music using EarPods with a Lightning connector. However, this is not a problem with charging cases that are equipped with a Lightning cable connector.
