The Basics Of IVF And Fertility Assisting Treatments

by Joanne P. Health Enthusiast
Most of the time, when people hear the term ‘IVF’ they immediately think of the procedure involving the actual fertilization process that occurs during intracytoplasmic sperm injection. While this isn’t wrong, IVF can also actually refer to other different procedures involved in treating infertility.
As the first in-vitro fertilization clinic in Davao, we are here to make sure patients are aware of the different procedures available to them as well as what these procedures do.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (or ICSI) is what generally comes into people’s minds whenever IVF is mentioned. It is the process of assisting the sperm’s fertilization of the egg by injecting a single sperm into the egg’s cytoplasm. After successful fertilization is achieved, what is now an embryo is transferred into the mother’s uterus.

This treatment is best fit for couples with a history of failed fertilization attempts as well as male factor infertility. Female patients may be asked to take medication that will help mature eggs develop for extraction.

Egg freezing

Egg freezing is a popular procedure among a lot of women who are not yet able for children at the present but want to preserve their eggs at their present and most potent state. A female’s eggs are extracted or harvested and kept in storage at deep freeze.

The eggs may be thawed at any given time and be injected with sperm. This makes it a good option for women who may undergo medical procedures that could impede their reproductive ability such as chemotherapy, or even women who want to postpone having kids for personal reasons.

Sperm freezing

Similarly, a man’s sperm may also be frozen and kept under storage for future use. This could be done for a variety of reasons – as it is for the women, it is recommended for men who will be going through medical procedures that could possibly affect their reproductive ability.

It is also a viable option if the man cannot be present on the day of the IVF procedure if the man has difficulty producing capable sperm.

Embryo freezing

Successfully fertilized eggs from a previous IVF procedure that have developed into embryos may also be frozen for future use. Note, however, that not all embryos may be frozen as it will depend on the stage of development they are in.

Testicular sperm extraction/aspiration

In the case of a blockage in the epididymis of the man due to prior surgery such as a vasectomy, or if the man may simply have poor sperm production, testicular sperm extraction or aspiration may be done to harvest active sperm.
Surgery may be done to go straight to the epididymis or testis to look for sperm if none can be found in the man’s ejaculate.

Fertility counseling

Before any type of procedure is done, consultation with a specialist is always best. Information on what the couple should do before treatment, what to expect with the different procedures, not to mention what treatments are best for the couple’s situation, are key in ensuring a smoother journey towards successful pregnancy.

Different couples have different needs when it comes to addressing fertility issues. The important thing to remember is that there is always a way to address any concern and that you may take it one step at a time with the help of our specialists.
