The art of choosing paint colors for your home

by Amy Wax Amy Wax – International Color Consultant

Painting your walls can be a quick and economical way to update your home's appearance. Not only can it provide a sense of warmth but also give your interior a personality and tie your décor together. Should you fail to choose the right colors for your space, however, it can also have the exact opposite effect and make your home interior look like an eyesore.

Here are a few tips that might come in handy when choosing the perfect interior and exterior paint colors.

For your paint color inspiration, pick something from your home décor that you absolutely love and want to incorporate into your home – perhaps an artwork or your favorite accent pillow.

Think about how you want the room to make you feel. Although everyone is different, color psychology has proven that certain colors can have certain effects on people. For example, green has a tendency to boost concentration while red can make you feel hungry and festive. Think about the function of the room and then pick a shade that highlights that function.

Try to go for paint colors that coordinate with your existing interior design and not the other way round. It is just easier that way. There are millions of paint color choices but once you pick one, you have limited yourself on the colors for your furnishings and fabrics.

If you like a particular shade, a fail-safe way to pick other colors to coordinate with it is to go up or down on the same color strip. Colors that are from the same family can help create a very cohesive yet interesting color palette.

Once you have picked some colors that you like, try bringing home paint samples or large color chips and positioning them up on the wall in several spots. Some colors may look a certain way in the morning and look completely different by dusk, so you should watch the colors during different times of the day in order to get a true feel for how it will look in your space.

Creating a perfect color scheme can be simple if you follow these simple rules. If you still have difficulty choosing your paint colors, you can find a color expert who can come to your home and for a small fee, can assist you in choosing the perfect colors for your space.
