Ten Fastest Growing Small Business Sectors Dominated by Real Estate

Real estate is making a comeback, and it's evident in the numbers. Sageworks, a financial data company based in North Carolina performed a study of small business growth. The company compiled January 1 through December 31, 2012 data. The results revealed small businesses had a growth rate of 8 percent overall last year.  The study further highlighted the list of the ten fastest growing industries. The Top 10 List is dominated by industries offering realty-type services. All of the RE industries outpaced the 8 percent overall growth rate for last year.

Let's take a peek …

Number one on the Ten Fastest Growing Sectors is residential building construction. The industry had a growth rate of almost 15 percent (exact: 14.77). Who would have "thunk?" With all the negative talk about the RE industry in general, residential building is on the rebound. Investors have dollars to spend, and we're seeing it in the trend of new homes being built in areas still littered with foreclosures. On the one hand, it seems odd, but the proof is in the research. RE and related services are on the way up again.

Number five on the list of the Fastest-Growth Industries for U.S. Small Companies is architecture, engineering, and similar services. This sector touted an 11.40% increase in 2012.

Further, contractors who provide services related to building exteriors, foundations and building structures experienced an 11.37 percent spurt in their fields. This sector placed number six on the list.

Right in line with above, the seventh industry on the Top 10 is also directly related to realty; contractors who provide services related to home maintenance/repair, alterations/additions, and finishing services escalated well over eleven percent (11.32).

Similarly, number ten on the list includes contractors who specialize in realty trades (for example, work-site preparation contractors). The 10.04 percent growth rate for this sector further adds a positive light for the building industry because it signals, yet again, RE industry escalation.

Number nine on the list is great news for those smaller contractors who work in the REO cleanup and landscaping fields. The rate of growth in this industry was 10.11 percent last year, surpassing the overall small business escalation of 8 percent.  Specifically, those entities that provide pest solution services, and ongoing landscaping, and janitorial and maintenance services to existing dwellings will thrive as real estate continues to rebound.
