TEMTATION FROM WITHIN . SAINT ANTHONY

He was born at Alexandria of noble parents, but at an early age he forsook the world for the monastic life and attained great piety.The following story is told of him:
One night as Anthony sat in his cell, he heard a knock at the door and going to to see who was at the door .he saw a terrible aspect of a man of gigantic stature and he asked,"Who art thou?"
The stranger answered ," I am Satan, and I come to ask thee how it is that thou and all thy disciples,when ye stray into sin or any evil befall ye, lay the blame and the shame on me and load me with curses."
Anthony said, " Have we not cause ? Dost thou not go about seeking whom thou mayest devour and tempt us, and torment us ? And art thou not the occasion of fall to many?"
The demon replied: " It is false! I do none of these things of which men accuse me; it is their own fault; they allure each other to sin; they are tempted of their own evil propensities; they torment and oppress each other; they go about seeking occasion to sin and they weakly lay the cause at my door for,since God came upon earth and was made man to redeem man,my power is at end. Lo! I have no arms. I have no dwelling place and wanting everything, can perform nothing. Let men complain of themselves,not of me;not I , but they alone are guilty."
To which the saint ,marvelling at so much sense and truth from the lips of the devil,replied," Although thou art called the father of lies,in this thou hast spoken the truth and even for this ,blessed be the name of Christ."

Most holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love of God and charity for his creatures made you worthy, while on earth, to possess miraculous magical powers. Encouraged by this, I implore you to obtain for me (make your request). Your are the Saint of Miracles, Blessed Anthony, and your heart was ever full of sympathy. Present my petition to Jesus, and the gratitude of my heart will be ever yours.
