Tam dao hill station

Tam Dao Hill Station

Tam Dao Hill Station at the elevation of 930 m was founded by French in 1907 as a place of escape from the heat of the Red River Delta and became known to them as the Cascade d'Argent (silver Cascade).

Unfortunately, the grand colonial villas are run-down and many have been replaced by politically correct,, Soviet-inspired, concrete box architecture. A  belated effort to restore the colonial villas ins now underway.  Hanoi residents sometimes call Tam Dao as the Dalat of the north Vietnam. This has more to do with its high elevation and cool climate than any resemblance to Dalat.
The problem with Tam Dao is that it's very small and there just isnt that much to see and to do. Most visitors quickly grow bored, however at least some travelers seems to enjoy it.

Highlights of North-east Vietnam

  • Cruise the emerald waters of Halong Bay and explore some of the 3000 plus islet and grottoes of this magnificent UNESCO heritage site.
  • Relax on the beaches of Cat Ba Island , Or trek through its scenic and untamed national park.
  • Discover the lakes, rivers, waterfalls and caves in Ba Be National Park, all from the comfort of the boat.
Tam Dao has no nightlife, but for sheer atmosphere you can't beat it, There is a grand stone staircase at the back leading up to the radio transmitter. Over toward the waterfall another path comes out on a wide area of ruins and great balustrades looking over the valley. It's like Babylon or something.
The people are very friendly and there are not many tourists... I went to Dam Dam to watch birds, and it is an excellent  place to do so.

The drive to get there is very picturesque, but Tam Dao itself is a bot disappointing. If you're living  in Hanoi and would like to find a summer weekend retreat, it might be worth heading up for the cool weather and the change of pace or for the annual Halloween party held here. However, travelers with limited time will almost certainly prefer to spend their precious Vietnam Tours relaxing somewhere else.
The three summits of Tam Dao mountain, all about 1400 m in height, are visible to the north-east of the hill station. Many hill tribe peoples live in the Tam Dao region, though they are largely assimilated.

Dampness makes the Tam Dao area particularly rich in flora and fauna. However, logging both legal and otherwise has had a serious impact on the environment. Remember that it is cool up in Tam Dao and that this part of Vietnam has a distinct winter. Don't be caught unprepared. Generally the best times to visit are from latte May  to mid September and from mid December to February.
