Table Architecture in India
by Rahul Rastogi DestinyseatingOne
of the most dynamically developing pieces of furniture is the Table. In India
also we see a wide variety of innovations which enhance the style and utility
of this particular piece of furniture. When we talk about tables the first one
which comes to mind is the dining table. In a country where food and dining
together with dear ones is given great importance, the dining table definitely
has an important role to play.
To
begin with, let us discuss the simplest forms of dining tables. These are the Canteen
tables in India. In canteens, be it in a school, college or the workplace
canteen, the primary focus is to be with friends and colleagues in the little
free time that is available. And so the grandeur of the table is not of much
importance here. For the same reason Canteen
tables in India are quite simple and cheap. They are either built of
concrete- in open food courts or made of metal or synthetic wood. The table is
usually strong and large to accommodate a large gang. But the finish and look
of the canteen table is mediocre. Basically Indian dining tables need to be
large not only to accommodate a huge gathering but also to contain the dishes
serving the various Indian delicacies for each meal.
Thinking
about canteens always reminds one of school, so we shall jump to the topic School tables in India.
In olden days schools seldom had proper tables and chairs. Later on as
education facilities improved benches and desks were introduced. And then they
gave way to tables and chairs. The school tables in India are designed in a way
to best suite a student’s needs. Nowadays school tables have drawers or lift
able table tops which provide the students with a private space for themselves
where they can keep their books and belongings. The tables may also be designed
as a desk with separate columns for 2 to 3 students or as individual tables for
the use of one student.
Next
we shall discuss the most diverse of them all – Restaurant
tables in India. Restaurants are gaining popularity as the place to
spend some fun time with loved ones. Be it a day out with friends or a day off
from cooking at home people flock to restaurants. This is the main reason that
the restaurants are decked with the most sophisticated furniture and a suiting
ambience. The restaurant tables in India
vary according to the class of the restaurant they belong to .In simple
restaurants we can find simple wood worked or metal tables and as the class of
the restaurant goes higher the furniture in it also has an identity of its own.
High class restaurants have tables with glass tops with designs carved on them.
Technology is also stepping into this side of furniture making and the latest
innovation in this field are multi-touch tables which keep people in
restaurants occupied with games until they receive their orders.
