by Asthma Allergy Asthma and Allergy Care PC

Is there redness in your eyes? Does it accompany itching also? You can first try some home remedies to see if there is any improvement. But, if the symptoms don’t subside, visit a specialist at asthma and allergy care in New Jersey for red eye treatment. Home remedies work when it’s not an eye allergy. Nevertheless, if pain and discomfort persist for days, you need to show a doctor. The redness can happen when the blood vessels that live on the surface of the eye get infected, injured or suffer from a medical condition.

Diagnosis for Eye Allergies

Blurriness, vision loss, pain, and burning are some of the common symptoms that you tend to notice when your eyes are red due to eye allergies. This condition can be allergic conjunctivitis, blepharitis, corneal ulcers or scleritis. You can succumb to eye allergy when your immunity becomes susceptible to environmental allergens inside or outside your house.

Here are a few eye allergy triggers that you can come across:

Pollens from trees, weeds, and grass are outside allergens

Pet dander, mold and dust mites are some of the indoor allergens

Diesel exhaust and secondhand smoke like toxic agents

Since the symptoms of eye allergies sometimes look similar to the ones causing eye ailment, accurate diagnosis becomes mandatory. You may have to undergo some tests for the diagnosis. While testing, your doctor can use a microscope to see your swollen blood vessels. He may also recommend a test for spotting white blood cell that may appear in the eye due to allergies. For this, he can gently scrape the inner lining of your eyelid.

Tips for Treating and Managing Eye Allergies

Apart from visiting your specialist for red eye treatment, you can follow some steps at home for faster recovery. These include:

Apply a warm compress to your eyes. For this, you have to soak a towel in warm water and squeeze it before putting in your eye area. The towel should not be very hot. Warm compress is effective on blood circulation and oil production on the eyelids, thereby helping lubrication in the eyes and, reducing redness and discomfort.

Apply a cool compress to eyes to relieve itchiness, redness, and inflammation. You will experience a soothing sensation while doing this.

Use artificial tears available over-the-counter for the lubrication of your eyes. It removes dust from the eyes and can also alleviate redness resulting from dry eyes. This is one of the best red eye treatments which one can easily try.

Keep your windows shut during pollen season. You can use air-conditioners in home and car to maintain air circulation. If you go outdoors, make sure to wear sunglasses or glasses.

Bring “mite-proof” covers for your bed to reduce exposure to dust mites and a humidifier for mold control.
