Surrogacy: What Are Its Advantages And Disadvantages

by Dr. D'Pankar Banerji Doctor, IVF

Creating a life is a complicated process. Sometimes the complications come in the way of the natural reproduction process. Many women suffer from infertility resulted from the inability to produce eggs. Surrogacy is one of the ways for them to enjoy motherhood. However it is not a very easy arrangement and like everything else have certain advantages as well as disadvantages. It is of utmost importance that a couple realizes all the pros and cons before choosing it. They need to realize what surrogacy really is.

What do you mean by Surrogacy?

It is an arrangement between the intended parent and another female, who will be participating in it as the substitute. She is known as Surrogate. The work of the surrogate is to carry and/or give birth to the child for the intended parents.

When is surrogacy ideally chosen?

When every other assisted reproductive method has failed.

What are the different types of Surrogacy?

There are two types of surrogacy:

1.      Gestational surrogacy – In this case the surrogate will not be genetically related to the child. The embryo will be created from the egg and the sperms of both of the intended parents. The surrogate will only act as a carrier who will carry and give birth to the baby.  This kind of surrogacy is undertaken when the intended mother is capable of producing an egg but incapable of carrying the baby.

2.      Traditional Surrogacy - Traditional surrogacy is the chosen method for cases, where the intended mother is incapable of creating an egg. Here the intende3d father’s sperm is used to fertilize the egg of the surrogate to create the embryo. She will be genetically linked to the child and will actually become the biological mother in a way.

What are the procedures?

It is a time consuming and lengthy process. It is very important to always consult or be under the guidance of the doctor. The Basic steps of the procedure are:

1. Finding a surrogate with qualities that the couple wants.

 2. After finding the surrogate, signing a legal document that will set some laws and rules that both the parties will abide by.

3. Start the medical Proceedings.

4. Choosing a technique and being under the guidance of the doctor till the delivery.

Now that we have the basic idea of what surrogacy really is, lets discuss the pros and cons of this arrangement.

The Advantages of Surrogacy:

1.      In a way it is better than adoption since the child is biologically yours. No need to be bothered about the history of the child and whether he/she will be compatible with your family or not.

2.      This is a procedure through which even homosexual couples can have their own child.

The disadvantages of surrogacy:

1.      Surrogacy is a complicated (in terms of legal and medical procedures) and time consuming procedure. Sometimes it takes a long time to find a surrogate. A lot of patience is required in the couple’s part.

2.      It is very expensive.

3.      There can be complication with the surrogate. Often after the delivery, the surrogate seems unwilling to give the baby.

4.      If there is some legal problems the couple might face problems later on.

Surrogacy has been gaining popularity despite the disadvantages because this is one method that can help an infertile couple has their one biological child.
