What happens when you have stones in your kidney?

Here are the common signs and symptoms that you may have in kidney stones:

Pain in the belly, back and side: Kidney stone pain is the most severe pain and almost unbearable for the patient. We can compare the severity of pain with the pain during childbirth or the pain while getting stabbed with the knife. The pain usually starts with the movement of stone into the ureter, as a result, the pressure is building up into the kidney. The pain starts suddenly and it changes the intensity and the location.

An urgent need to go: An urgent need to go to the washroom is another sign that your stone is moving into the lower part of the urinary tract.

Pain and burning sensation during urination: This condition is called dysuria in medical term and occurs when the stone reaches the junction between the ureter and the bladder leads to severe burning sensation and pain during urination.

Blood in the urine:  Haematuria (Bloody urine) is the most common symptoms of urinary tract stone and usually happens in severe cases. Sometimes the bleed will be there in urine but you will not able to see it because of the too small blood cells. Your doctor can only observe by taking your urine samples.

Smelly urine: Normal or healthy urine doesn’t have strong odour. Cloudy and smelly urine could be the sign of urinary tract infections or kidney stones.

Nausea, vomiting, fever are the other less common sign of kidney infections or stone.

What are the various causes of kidney stones?

Kidney stones can be as small as a grain of sand which can easily pass through your pee, also can be a bigger one that can block your urinary tract. Kidney stones can be caused by many things which we perform in our daily routine. Some of them are:

  1. Lack of water

  2. Diet: Kidney stone happens when the crystals of calcium and oxalate stick together and form a stone-like structure. Food having a high amount of calcium oxalate can lead to the kidney stone. Examples include:

  • Spinach

  • Grites

  • Rhubarb

  • Bran cereal

  • Tomato

The most common myth is that drinking milk can bring kidney stones. If you will take high calcium food along with the food containing oxalate, the oxalate and calcium will bind into the stomach instead of in the kidneys.

Sodium: If you are taking sodium through table salt then be aware, because you might have developed a kidney stone.  So watch out for salty snacks.

Obesity: You are almost thrice as likely to get kidney stones if you are overweight.

What are the various treatment methods for kidney stones?

Pain control: Painkiller medications prescribed by your health care provider can help you to fight from the pain during kidney stones.

Surgical methods: Ureteroscopy, Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, open surgery and dissolving uric acid stones are the common surgical procedure that your urologist will prefer after observing your type of stone.

How early you can recover after surgery?

The complete recovery depends on the type of surgery performed.

Ureteroscopy: The complete recovery can take 14-15 days and you can resume your work within 1 week of surgery.

Open surgery: Complete recovery can take 6 to 10 weeks of time.

Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy: Patient can completely recover within 2-3 weeks and you can resume the work within 1 week.
