Now the streaming platform has featured the headlines by announcing the inclusion of all 21 Ghibli’s feature-length flicks. HBO’s name has always been associated with quality programs and series, and the trend seems to continue in the upcoming times as well. Even with the epic supernatural story of the GOT ending, HBO does not wish to slow down. The expectations have been set high for the forthcoming streaming platform from WarnerMedia.

HBO Max seems promising on paper, and the yet announced list intrigues the viewers as well. HBO Max looks like the first platform that will showcase content that has not been offered anywhere before. The most recent example of this being the entirety of Ghibli movie collection. GKIDS and HBO Max have partnered up to bring the entire roster of Ghibli movie catalog to the subscribers. Titles like Spirited Away, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Howl’s Moving Castle will be featured at the launch of the service. Of course, there will be several additions after the release.

Here is the entire list of Ghibli movies coming to HBO Max:

  1. Castle in the Sky
  2. From Up On Poppy Hill
  3. Spirited Away
  4. Howl’s Moving Castle
  5. My Neighbors the Yamadas

  15. Princess Mononoke

  17. The Secret World of Arrietty
  18. The Wind Rises
  19. Tales From Earthsea
  20. When Marnie Was There
  21. Porco Rosso

The chairman of Studio Ghibli Koji Hoshino expressed his excitement to work with HBO. He stated that they are happy to bring the entire collection of films to the viewers in the US. HBO Koji added that Max is an ideal platform for them to feature the flicks as it is a premium brand. He went on to state that now the fans will be able to stream their favorite movies at any time, and the films will gather up huge number of audience as well.

The films are definitely intriguing for the fans, and it will undoubtedly pave the path for Japanese animations as well. However, it has not been confirmed whether the movies will be available in their original language or not. It may not look like a big deal to someone who is new to animation movies; however, the hardcore fans always prefer Japanese with subs to the English dub of the movie.

Nevertheless, a partnership with Ghibli is certainly going to help HBO Max in standing out from the general competition. Whenever a new streaming service is announced, it is always speculated whether it will pose any threat to streaming giants like Netflix or not. But with the passing time, it is becoming more evident that the audience has diverse tastes and looks for content that suits them. HBO Max may be onto something with offering a completely different genre to the audience. Let’s hope the fans reward them accordingly for the bold step.
