Steampunk Fashion and Steampunk Clothing

by Emma W. writer
Wearing costumes becomes more and more popular in nowadays world. People love to organize some theme parties or some events within the certain styles. As one of the most popular one in the alternative styles, steampunk style is one that most people are fond of. Steampunk is a science fiction genre based on an alternate time-line in which technology progressed along mechanical lines, particularly through steam power instead of electricity. After its success on the science, it was applied into clothing style by some forward designers. Since then, steampunk is more recognized through the clothing field than the science part. No matter how, it is a style that combines a lot of eras and different cultures.
Steampunk outfits typically reflect Victorian era fashion and technology, but it can include features of other eras and cultures such as Edwardian, the Wild West, and even the pirates.
Steampunk clothing often reflects a dark, bleak, and dystopian theme. They are typically made by modifying existing outfits from old eras and adding mechanical accessories. Hats, gears, and goggles are popular along with modified toy guns. Clothing colors tend toward shades of metal, such as bronzed oranges and yellows, rusty browns and dark reds, and various shades of gray and black.
Steampunk fans create their own fashion designs, an adventurous pastiche of Victorian, Edwardian and military style accented with sometimes crudely mechanized accouterments like brass goggles and wings made from pulleys, harnesses and clockwork pendant necklaces, not to mention the odd ray gun dangling at the hip. Steampunk style is corseted, built on a scaffolding of bustles, crinoline petticoats and parasols & high-arced sleeves, often made with leather.
Steampunk is a style that equals to originality. And the originality is achieved through the accessories that people add to themselves and their clothes. And the key features include goggles, facial hair for guys and corsets for women. Dressing up is a big part of Steampunk’s appeal for creators and fans alike. One of the reasons we chose this as a theme for our costume contest is it allows a new way to do costuming where one doesn’t have to necessarily dress up as somebody else’s character. It’s about creating your own character and your own world.
No matter what kind of clothing style it is, it must have some key elements to show that it is different from the other styles. And steampunk is a style that its key elements are used to achieve the originality.
