Stay Warm and Save Energy This Winter

by Kevin Smith Author
As winter approaches, a yearly checkup from your local home AC repair service in Johns Creek can help you save money on energy this year. Here are a few more tips from the experts that will help you and your family keep warm.

New Filters
The first and easiest way to help save money this season is to change your air filters. Set yourself a reminder at the start of the season to change your filters. If you have pets or indoor allergies, upgrade to a high-quality HEPA filter and change it at least once a month. If illness is a concern, look for filters that specifically trap viruses and bacteria in your home. Airborne pet dander and dust can clog filters in just a few weeks. With more debris trapped inside the filter, your unit has to work harder to pull air through the return vents. This will manifest itself in higher monthly energy costs and increase the wear and tear on your unit. Many filter companies also offer scented filters so you can keep your home smelling fresh and clean this season while you save money.

Weatherproofing
When the first cold snap hits your area, take a few minutes to check for drafts in your home. Drafts are caused by small cracks around doors and windows that allow cold air in during the winter. To check for drafts, turn on your heater and allow your home’s interior to warm up. Once you’re warm and toasty, feel around the edges of all your doors and windows. If you feel cold air coming in through the seams, check to see if the weather stripping is worn and replace it as needed.

Digital Thermostat
Let this be the year you finally upgrade your old mechanical or analog thermostat to a newer digital model. Digital thermostats are more accurate and many come with a wireless programming feature. One of many smart home upgrades that add value to your home, a digital thermostat with Wi-Fi can be controlled and programmed remotely with the use of a smartphone or tablet. Did you forget to turn the system off before leaving on vacation? Tap a button on your remote access app, and turn it off or on no matter where you are in the country.
