Stacking CNC Machining Cutting Tools? Consider The Following Points

by Norm Grimberg CNC Machining and Machine Shop

CNC machining has come a long way since its inception eight decades ago. It’s more sophisticated now. A smoother process, high-tech machining parts capable of fueling life to even the most intricate of designs.

Cutting tools are the front men in this road of perfection. They are the builders. They give the shape to the materials, molding them into the CNC machined parts you desire. They are the fighters and your CNC machine shop is no less than a war zone. And we need to choose our fighters well to win the game.

Here’s are a few considerations you need to keep in mind before you assemble your CNC machining cutting tool ‘army’. This list is in addition to general tool selection checkbox - sharper edges, durability, rigidity, precision, and easy installation and adjustment, of course.

1. Go huge, or go home (not): If you wish for cleaner CNC machined parts with a smoother surface finish, you might want to go for larger tools. They cut more neatly and have a better clearance. Plus, they stay sharper for longer - you won’t have to send them for sharpening that frequently.

Smaller cutting tools are the best to work on smaller pieces with intricate details.

2. It’s a Combined Effort: CNC gurus advice working a combination of smaller, larger and mid-size tools, and so do I. Chances are your project is a complex one that needs definite attention on both molecular and wholesome level. And what can be better than engaging all of your army?

3. Flat-end or Ball-end?: Definitely the former. Flat-end cutters are the superior lot in a variety of ways- they are efficient, pose a better surface quality. They check most of the boxes we need for a high-quality CNC machining part.

Note: For high-speed cutting operations, we need to have CNC tools that can bear high temperature and pressure, friction, impact, and vibration effect that is apparent when cutting at that speed. If your CNC machining project deals with super-high speeds, choose a cutting tool with a comparatively higher hardness, strength, and toughness, heat and wear resistance.
