Spiritual Jewellery

by Sandeep Malik Seo Executive in Findmycampus.com

Spiritual jewelry can mean different things to different people depending on their own particular belief systems. This article will not be discussing whether one type of religion or belief is better or right when compared to another. Instead, it will touch on many different types of cultures and their specific use of certain jewelry in direct relation to their own spiritual beliefs.

Many cultures use jewelry purely to symbolize or depict certain stories and to use the different simplistic meanings to convince or put a certain point across to their congregations or believers.

Other cultures believe in the power that certain objects have and they use these objects for divination or when wanting to convene with their gods or spirits. Others still, believe that certain natural objects hold certain powers or vibrate at certain frequencies and that wearing these objects or placing them on certain points on their bodies can have healing effects.

Still others hold superstitious beliefs that wearing certain type’s Spiritual jewelry of metals and amulets will give them special powers and keep them protected from harm, illness or natural disasters.

The Christian faith has taken many symbols from pagan and other older traditions and given their own interpretations to them. The main one here would be the cross, which is usually worn as a necklace. It symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus, but it is also worn to show others that they are members of the Christian faith.

Another significant fact is that the English word for bead derives from the Old English word “Bede” meaning a prayer. It is worth noting that in all religions, with the exception of the Jewish faith, there are prayer beads involved. In the Catholic faith they use rosary beads. Prayer beads are not used by non liturgical churches.

Followers of the Hindu faiths use prayer beads called Japa beads. They are usually made from sandalwood beads. The Bhakti sect of Hinduism sometimes uses Japa beads made from Tulasi beads (Holy Basil). In all cases there are 108 beads on a string. When chanting Japa the Hare Krisna faith chants 108 rounds of the Mahamantra. Beginners are instructed to chant sixteen rounds of 108 repetitions!

The Buddhists call their prayer beads Mala beads and the Islam faith call their prayer beads Misbahah and in the non – Arab Muslim regions they are called Tespih. They are often made of wood beads, but are also made of olive seeds, ivory, amber, pearl or plastic. A Misbahah consists of 99 beads (corresponding to the ninety nine names the Muslims have from Allah.

Many people wear pendants today without realizing there is a deeper meaning. The Egyptian Ankh is a looped cross that represents the unity of the divine and of matter, which are never separated. This symbol carried a powerful message – manifest life shows forth divinity, continuously and totally. The Egyptian never suffered the great schism between spirit and matter, heaven and earth, which has done so much damage in our time.

Another commercial Spiritual jewelry pendant made popular in the sixties was the Chinese yin-yang symbolizing unity in duality. Split by an S in the center one half was white with a black dot and the other half was black with a white dot. This simple image is one of balanced dynamism, symbolizing the interdependence of contrary forces and principles in the cosmos.

Besides these present day commercial images with a deeper meaning many pieces of silver jewelry are much scarcer to come by and are worn by shamans and witch doctors. It is often not so much the object that holds the power, but rather the belief by the wearer that it is so.
