Calabria is popular for its beaches and is surrounded mostly by water. Even though it’s known for its lovely beaches, it also has incredible mountains. It is sparsely populated and is largely rural because of its geography. In Calabria, the cities of Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro are the easiest to reach by public transport. However, the coastal towns of Scilla, Tropea, Scalea, Squillance and Paola are the biggest attractions for the tourist. Also, there are many medieval villages which are so charming and exquisite. Listed below are the few towns and cities of Calabria one should visit.

·         Reggio Calabria- Calabria’s largest and oldest city is home to beaches and the National Museum.

·         Catanzaro- This is the capital of Calabria which is located in the Italy’s narrowest part and is home to tallest bridge of Europe. Also it has the remains of Norman-era castle.

·         Cosenza-This place boasts of 11th century castle, University of Calabria, open air museum and it is the cultural city that is historically important in Southern Italy.

·         Tropea- It is the beach town located near the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is home to Norman cathedral built in 12th century.

·         Squillace- This is an important archaeological site which is located on the beach town near Lonian Sea.

·         Scilla- This is another beach town with beautiful panorama that lies in the coastline of Tyrrhenian Sea.

·         Sybaris- It was one of the important Greek cities of 6the century along the coastline of Lonian sea.

·         Badolato- It is the village which is located near the lonian coast and has many Byzantine churches.

There are varies accommodations available in Calabria however what is available will be depended on where you are planning to visit in the region.  You will get more choices of hotels and restaurants in bigger towns rather than smaller towns. There are many resorts, high end hotels, small B&B’s run by small family or you could rent your own house or apartments. One vital thing should keep in mind while travelling to this place is that it is very tough to get around and see places without a vehicle. So make travel arrangement before hand and get the required assistance from the place you plan to stay.

What to see and do

As mentioned earlier, it is known for its beaches. You could easily spend your whole vacation by happily hopping around beach to beach. However, there is much more to his region than crystal blue water and gorgeous beaches. There are notable archaeological discoveries which have been found on both off the coast and land. The most famous one is Riace Bronzes which are the incredible bronze Greek statues of 5th century and are still maintained in excellent condition. The mountains found in Calabria makes it excellent region for people who enjoy hiking. You could rent a car and explore the region on your own. You would be amazed to find many hidden medieval villages which are totally cut off from the world.
