Here are some of the best tools and things you can do to maintain an organized AV room.

Clean Out What You Already Have

It is perfectly natural that over time your AV room can get gross. Not strictly speaking about organization, dirt and grime can also build up and make the space dusty. If you are having to work fast and need to get to things quick, you may find yourself throwing things in random places and not finding time to get back to putting them away or cooling cables up properly. While this is something that will definitely happen occasionally, you need to make efforts to regularly clean and tidy your work space.

Even if you take 30 minutes once a week, go through the gear you have, clean it up, and coil it properly. Through taking the time to go through what you have, you may even find gear that is broken or no longer needed. You can sell it or donate it and clear out space for better equipment.

When it comes to organization, taking time to start by cleaning will make a huge difference. It sets you up for success and is a habit that you will want to keep consistent.

Cable Management Using Velcro Cable Wraps

Likely you are using lots of cables in your job. In order to create a better organizational system you should be making use of Velcro cable wraps. These can make a huge difference in creating an organizational system that is effective and easy to maintain. By using cable wraps, you are able to avoid many of your cables from being tangled and can even use cable wraps to organize and separate certain types of cables.

Cable management is something that is incredibly important to having an organized AV work environment. If you can master this, it will simplify the rest of your organization. High quality Velcro cable wraps can make a really big difference in creating a system that lasts for a while. By investing in some quality Velcro wraps, you will be able to make use of them hundreds of times and they will become a valued part of your organizational system.

Additional Organizational Methods

There are dozens of suggestions when it comes to AV organization, however some methods may be more effective for you than others. Honestly, a lot of how you organize depends on your needs and what systems will work best for you. Here are some common examples of some organizational methods that you may want to try out.

Drawers and bins are excellent for being able to store small components that range anywhere from mics to adapters to chargers. Having dedicated drawers will help you know where things are and where to put them back. Having drawers to store gear inside of will even encourage you to put things back where they belong and reduces the risk for misplacing things.

Labeling is also a great idea for organizing. Even putting labels on spare computers is a good idea, because it will help you keep track of specific items, so the next time someone needs to borrow a laptop you will be able to give them one that has a certain name or number and will be able to know if it has been put back. If you have implemented the drawer system, label the individual bins, this will further help you to stay on top of things.

Wall hooks are great options for storing cables. Especially if you have made use of the Velcro cable wraps, wall hooks makes it easy to see where everything is and to be able to quickly grab what you need.

Final Thoughts

If you are working in AV there is a ton of fast-paced acting followed by lulls. During these lulls make it an effort to work on the organization of your gear. By preparing and organizing what you have you can make it easier for yourself in the long run and will be able to quickly access the cables and gear you need without too many problems.
