The Parthenon at the Acropolis: The most iconic of historical attractions in Greece is the Parthenon that is situated atop the Acropolis. It is perhaps the most famous of all historic attractions in the country and is a place that is not to be missed when on a trip to Athens. It was built to honour Goddess Athena who is regarded as the guardian of the city and its construction began in 447 BC and attained completion in 432 BC. It was built upon the ruins of an older temple which was demolished by the invading Persians. It has served a multitude of purposes during its long existence, having been an ancient Greek temple, a church, a fortress, a mosque and even used as a storehouse by the Ottomans to store munitions.
Santorini: The volcanic island of Santorini forms part of the Cyclades group of Greek islands. It is renowned for its fabulous sunsets, stunning views and white-washed houses. The capital of Santorini is Fira, which offers an amazing architectural blend of Cycladic and Venetian styles. Its quaint white cobblestone streets are home to bustling tavernas, hotels, cafes and shops. All of this can be found precariously placed atop the edge of 400 meter high cliffs!
